A Creative and Diverse Community Growing Together

*Please be aware Out of School Hours Care will not be available on these days
I have been greatly encouraged over the number of tours Debbie Showers (Assistant Principal) and I have been running over the last couple of weeks.  I have conducted tours for new parents who are interested in both Steiner and Mainstream sections of the school as well as potential teachers who are interested in applying to work at Thornbury in 2017.
If you know of any family that have not yet enrolled for 2017 who are new to the school, they must complete an enrolment form and hand it to the office.  This applies to both Steiner and Mainstream.  I am happy for families to come on a tour- they can book through the office.
We have started planning for 2017.  I am looking at grade structures at the moment and then staffing.   An early return of enrollment forms will greatly help us in the classroom process.
At the moment there will be no reduction in the number of classes (both Mainstream and Steiner) for 2017.   This of course can change if more families come or leave Thornbury between now and March 2017.
It is my goal as Acting Principal to plan and inform everyone in our school community of the 2017 classes by early December.   However sometimes there are some circumstances beyond my control but I hope that everything will be in place-including the Substantive Principal.
If you have any questions about 2017, feel free to call or see me.  I may not be able to share everything with you at the moment due to respect of various people involved.
Please Take Care Crossing the Road!
A parent has approached me this week very concerned that children were dropped off from a car in the middle of Murray St  (behind the school) and the children just ran across the road.  These children were nearly struck from the car behind them.  I have asked the children to take care while crossing the road but I also encourage parents/carers to make sure they have safely stopped before allowing children to exit the car.   I do not wish to be calling any parent/carer to inform them that their child has ended up in hospital over something that could have been avoided.
शुभ दीवाली 2016 !!
I do wish all our Indian community a Happy Diwali day this Sunday.  This is a major celebration on the Hindu calendar.  The Darebin Arts and Entertainment Centre has a special Taste of India to celebrate Diwali from 10am.  This event is free.
Have a great weekend everyone

Young Doctors is a health leadership program which trains Indigenous and non-Indigenous young people to be health ambassadors in their communities. It is designed and run by local elders, respected community members and supported by health workers in each location. The program teaches leadership, hygiene, health literacy, nutrition and environmental health. This year about 400 Young Doctors will be trained in NSW, Victoria, South Australia and Queensland. The project is entirely funded by generous private foundations, corporations and individuals.
We are well and truly underway with our second group of MALPA Bubup doctors at Thornbury PS. The sessions are being held each Friday with a group of grade 5/6 students. Shara Graham (a parent at Thornbury PS) is the manager of the project and Melanie Harrison (Aboriginal teacher) is the leader. Together we continue to deliver the Bubup Young Doctors sessions.
This semester the students we are working with are both Aboriginal and non Aboriginal. We are hopeful to continue the MALPA Bubup Doctors at Thornbury PS in 2017 but also potentially at another local, surrounding school.
We also have our mini graduation coming up on Friday 4th November, 2016. The students will send out individual invitations to their friends/families and we hope that many of you can come along!
Lucky last, we are keen to involve as many health workers/community members as possible throughout the program but more importantly elders. If you are, or know of anyone who may be interested, please contact the school, Melanie and/or Shara as we’d love you to come along and join the fun!

A big thank you to Michael and the arborists from Arborform Tree Services!
