Thornbury Primary School Newsletter
9th February 2017 | Issue 1
A Creative and Diverse Community Growing Together

Preps do not attend school on the following Wednesdays:
Wednesday 15th February, Wednesday 22nd February & Wednesday 1st March.
Preps will be attending full weeks as of Monday 6th March.
We are well underway into the school year.
Vision Presentations
I would like to thank the 100 (approx) who could make it to the sessions around my vision for Thornbury Primary School.  I would also like to say how encouraged I am for all the support I have received from the parent/carer community.
If you missed a presentation,  we recorded one of them and have placed it online for you with the newsletter.
If you would like to chat about any aspect of the vision, please feel free to come and see me.
Car Parking
I understand parking is difficult during peak times of the day but I ask parents/carers not to park too close or near the School Crossings.  A couple of concerned parents/carers have informed me that they did not feel they can cross the road safely if cars are parked in the middle of or too close to the crossing.  We want all our children to be safe.
Have a great weekend everyone,
Leon Bell

Counselling for children and families

For the previous five years we have had the services of NIRODAH for private, school based counselling and psychology services at TPS.  They are no longer able to offer us this service so we have made arrangements to work with Dr Hanife Gaducu.  Hanife is lovely.  She will be here Thursdays starting next week.  You can also see her at her rooms in Moonee Ponds where she has a family counselling space.  To access her services either at school or her rooms, please see Debbie for a referral.  Just take this to your GP and ask for a mental health plan (all the details are on the referral form), return the form to Debbie and she will organise for Hanife to make contact.  This service is available for all TPS families.
All requests for educational needs assessments also go through Debbie, but we use the services of the Department of Education.  They have a very large waiting list and tend to do more assessments than counselling.
Any questions, just see Debbie.

The Camps, Sports and Excursions Fund (CSEF) commenced in 2015 for four years and will provide payments for eligible students to attend camps, sports and excursions.

Families holding a current Health Care Card are eligible to apply. $125 per year is paid for eligible primary school students.

If you did not apply in 2015, parents or legal guardians are required to submit a CSEF application form.

New families to our school are asked to speak to the office staff about completing a form.  Once registered your application remains live so long as your card is valid.

CSEF application forms are now available at the office, please make your application as soon as possible for processing

TPS has so many incredible ukulele players and songwriters come and join the fun. As you can hear on the school cd fantastic songs have been written and performed by our uke students.  We even wrote a book called 'Ukulele Songs by Kids for Kids' released this year, find it at your local music store or . There are still some spaces left for new students to start in 2017. Lessons are 30 minutes, weekly, 3 kids per class, or individual lessons. $12.30 per lesson (grp 3).  About me, i'm Liam Gerner 33 years old and a professional songwriter/guitarist. I am a great believer in learning and teaching music, especially with children. I have worked in Europe, US and Australia recording, touring, studying and teaching guitar for the past 13 years (Pnau, Elton John, Empire of the Sun). I am currently playing guitar for my solo and band projects and with Vika and Linda Bull, The Eurogliders ( Please contact me to book your child in or if you have any queries . Hello from the OSHC room,

We would like to welcome all our new preps and enrolments into our 2017 OSHC program.  There has been a very healthy number of students joining us this year with more still rolling in. Everyone who has joined has transitioned exceptionally well—I’m so impressed. If you walked into our room you wouldn’t be able to tell who is new and who has been here for years! A big well done to all the children.
No time has been wasted kicking off the program as we are already in full swing. The children have been excited to tell us what they got up to over the Christmas break, so we have been putting together a big poster highlighting all their adventures.  There has been a lot of busy beading business going on here too, with the children designing and making bangles and necklaces to wear and take home.  We have so many exciting plans and ideas for this term and can see this will be our best year yet.
Our stick insects are super happy with their new enclosure and it’s a special time for them as they are laying eggs at the moment. We have over 40 so far just from Ivy and can see the next one starting too, so if we are lucky we might have some babies in a few months.
Just a reminder that if you need to make changes to a booking, we do request that you please let us know before 9am to avoid charges or ASAP as a courtesy. It is very difficult to work out numbers and staffing just before a session.

Thank you,
From Andi and the OSHC team
