Farewell TPS
I want to thank everyone for the way I have been welcomed at Thornbury Primary School and for your support during the last two terms.  Students, parents, carers and staff have been wonderful and I want wish everyone well for the future. 
Watt Street
If you are dropping off your children in Watt St please be aware that there has been a number of parents booked when stopping in a No Standing Zone.  This can happen even if you do not leave your car.  I am told that council officers will take a photograph and the fine will be simply sent to you.
I have been asked to investigate whether we can establish another “kiss and go” zones like we have in Hutton St.   We will discuss it at school council tonight although it is ultimately a decision for Darebin Council.
While talking about Watt St a parent’s car had its window smashed and some items stolen several weeks ago.  It is a good reminder not to leave valuables in the car especially when they can be seen.  The parent involved was only away from their car for 15 minutes.
First Day of Term 4 – Monday, October 3rd
The first day of term 4 is Monday, October 3rd.  This day IS NOT a pupil free day as may have been stated previously.
Holiday Travelling
The Department has asked us to publicise the following advice for anyone who might be travelling in a car over the holidays.
As the school holidays are approaching, you may have plans to travel on Victoria’s roads.  Significant rain is expected to fall over much of Victoria over the next few days, which may result in flooding.
Because of this rainfall, there is an increased risk to those travelling on our roads, and it is possible that houses across the State may be impacted as well.
I urge you to heed the following advice from emergency services:
  • You should never drive through floodwater – it only takes about 15 centimetres of water to lose control of your vehicle. 
  • Drive to the conditions around you and be aware of road hazards such as mud, debris, damaged roads and bridges. 
  • Roads in your area could be damaged by the bad weather so plan your journey and monitor VicTraffic for road condition updates and any road closures, see: Vic Traffic 
  • Never swim, walk or play in floodwater, it is dangerous and may contain hazardous debris or toxins. 
  • If your property is at risk of flooding, please raise belongings onto tables, benches or beds and if you are on a farm, consider moving your livestock to higher ground. 
  • Remain informed with emergency broadcasters to ensure you are up-to-date with the latest conditions and if possible, make sure your neighbours are aware of the situation. For more information, see: Vic Emergency

Music News
Spicy Semitones at Recording Studio
Last week our school rock band went to Pip Normans' Studio to record their original graduation song!  The students learnt so much about "dropping in" and "rendering" etc.  Thanks to Finley for all of his work with this amazing band. Look out for it on our schools annual CD/digital download.

Hello Parents and Carers,

The Festival committee this year is made up of teachers from each team level.
Once again we need all parents and carers to assist to make the day a great success for our students. If you coordinated a stall last year and are willing to help again, or are interested in assisting this year, we need your help.
Please contact your class teacher who will be assisting with organising the class stalls this year.  This year we are also trying to reduce the amount of stalls and instead have mega stalls by combining more classes together.
Parents and Carers are also needed to assist with the set up of the student art and craft work. We will begin the set up the Friday before the Arts Festival in the Babajen.
If you are able to assist in any way, please let Antoinette know.

It’s the end of Term 3 so…
It must be Mango time!
Yes, it’s that time of year to start ordering fresh, juicy delicious, healthy mangoes.
Trays of mangoes will cost $25 for 10 - 14 mangoes.

Tell your family and friends. It’s a great way to support the school and get mango-ready for summer.

As you are probably aware our school office is a busy place. We try to assist with questions and information when requested.
We are inundated with phone calls from parents/carers at the end of the day wishing to get various messages to their children. 
We also have many requests for calling students over PA system through-out the day and even after bell time.  We ask that parents/carers plan ahead and inform children of arrangements for after school.
Messages to be conveyed to students should only be for very important or emergency situations.

The National Disability Insurance Scheme (NDIS) Information
The National Disability Insurance Scheme (NDIS) information for students who live in North Eastern Metropolitan Area (NEMA) in receipt of the following programs/supports:

  • Students with disability transport program (Specialist School Bus, taxi or conveyance allowance); and/or
  • Personal care support at school (Program for Students with Disabilities (PSD) funding at level 4, 5 or 6; and/or Medical Intervention Support (MIS)).

How do I know if my child is eligible for NDIS?

From October 2016, students in receipt of these programs/supports can access the NDIS if they meet the age, residency and disability requirements.
If your child meets the disability requirements and you live in NEMA which is the following Local Government Areas outlined below, your child may be able to access the scheme. 
  • Banyule
  • Darebin
  • Nillumbik
  • Whittlesea
  • Yarra

When will parents/carers be contacted?

From late September 2016 the NDIA will phone you or send you a letter to begin the initial paperwork.

What do I need to do after the NDIA contacts me?

As the NDIS may fund supports and services in addition to what your child is currently receiving at school we encourage you to respond to the NDIA as soon as they get in touch.
It is important to note the NDIS does not fund supports that relate to your child’s learning.  These will still be the responsibility of schools and the education system.
If your child is eligible for the NDIS, you will be asked to work with the NDIA to develop a plan which will identify the services and support best suited to your child.

What will change and what won’t

Your child will be assessed for need and may be eligible for a range of supports. For now, your child’s bus to school and support for personal care needs at school will continue to be delivered in the same way. If there are changes to arrangements in the future these will be gradual and we will talk to you first. For now there is no change.

What if my child isn’t receiving personal care or transport?

If you live in NEMA and your child is not currently receiving these services through the Victorian Government, and you believe they might be eligible for the NDIS, we encourage you to approach the NDIA to be assessed. You can contact the NDIA on 1800 800 110.
What if I don’t live in NEMA?
The NDIS is transitioning across Victoria, Local Government Area by Local Government Area from 1 July 2016 to 30 June 2019.  To see when the Local Government Area you live in is scheduled to transition, please refer to the website:  Closer to the Area rollout more information will become available.
