#25May2017 Actions & Events
Over the past few weeks, I have been humbled to hear from many people telling me how the Kilimanjaro Declaration resonates with them – that they have pledged their support and, now they are keen to ‘do something’ to support Africans Rising.
While reflecting on this during the week, I have noted the myriad ways people from all walks of life have been making contributions to the movement – the volunteers in Tunisa, Mozambique and South Africa who are giving their time to help mobilise; the artists getting together in Dar Es Salaam to record a song, to promote the launch; and while scrolling through Instagram – I came across the image of Toto Chipeta, a Human Rights Activist, Educator and Cyclist - who is now on a cycling journey from Nairobi (Kenya) to Lusaka (Zambia). Toto started his journey 5 days ago in Nairobi and will be making stops in towns and villages along the way, to share the #KilimanjaroDeclaration and the #AfricansRising vision.
Toto’s actions are as good an example as any, of the small and significant ways ordinary people are working to make the #25May2017 launch a success. The movement is yours and the work needed to build this pan-African unity is ours, together. The #25May2017 launch is an enabling event – I look forward to movements, people and all civil society organisations to using the launch to amplify their ongoing demands, struggles and campaigns for social, economic, environmental and gender justice.
One of the key aims of the Africans Rising launch is to ensure that #Africans Rising inspires millions of Africans to demand from their governments and leaders; good governance as they work collectively towards common goals of peace, social inclusion and shared prosperity. We aim to let our leaders know that we have had enough of this unfair and unjust system and make clear our intention to work together, to build a new Africa.
The launch team has put together a short guide to help you host your own event for #25May2017, please read it and share widely with your friends, family and colleagues – it is the actions of ordinary people that can help build that better life, we all dream of.
Africa shall rise! Aluta Continua
