Charlie Calbom has converted a house lot in West Phoenix into a small farm. He grows fruits and vegetables for his family and neighbors; and markets excess through the Community Exchange Table (a collective of small growers that he helped to start) at the Phoenix Farmer's Market. Charlie is growing organically, avidly building the soil on his property through a process of sheet mulching.
This has landed him in trouble with the City of Phoenix. He has received a couple of citations having to do with visual appearance and potential fire and rodent hazards. He is in danger of receiving another citation and the possibility that the City will clean up the property for him by removing all his work.
Can we help?
Instead of holding our regular member's meeting on the first Saturday of the month, I would like to spend that time helping Charlie making the property neater and more orderly. If you plan to help, please wear long pants and close-toed shoes. The mulch has thorns and stickers. Please also bring gloves and any hand tools you may feel are appropriate. If there is enough of us, we may also be helping to build garden beds and plant.
