An In the Trenches Takeover
by
Stand for Children Founder and CEO
Jonah Edelman

Families are under incredible stress right now.

Millions of parents put out of work by the pandemic are out of money and facing impossible choices:

Food or baby formula?

Rent or medicine?

Car payment or water bill?

Families need help NOW.

A few weeks ago, Rebecca told you about what her team was learning when they talked to hundreds of Arizona parents: they are among the tens of millions across the country who are suffering. I heard her message loud and clear so I asked to “take over” In the Trenches this week to tell you about what Stand for Children is doing to make a difference.

Stand has teamed up with Propel and GiveDirectly to launch Project 100, a nationwide campaign to provide $1,000 direct cash transfers to 100,000 families in dire need in the next 100 days.

Project 100 is providing a critical lifeline to 100,000 families across the country who receive SNAP benefits and use Propel’s Fresh EBT App.(if you haven’t seen the media coverage, here is a segment from CNN.)

At the same time, our Arizona team is on track to help at least 300 families receive this assistance. That’s $300,000 new dollars coming to Arizona families from national donors, individuals, and foundations committed to alleviating the impact of the COVID crisis on vulnerable families.

Members of the Arizona team have also stepped up to provide much needed technical assistance to both English and Spanish-speaking families – donating more than half their time each week over the next month to help families receive Project 100 payments.

Here’s what one of our Arizona team members said about the experience:

“Doing the outreach calls for our GiveDirectly program has been a once in a lifetime experience. Since the COVID-19 outbreak started, we’ve heard so many heart wrenching stories about families losing their jobs and not being to meet their immediate needs. One that stands out is Veronica. She lost her job and had to move in with her parents. Then, her parents both lost their jobs. They didn’t know how they would cover expenses – especially food for them plus her four children. Letting parents like Veronica know that they are eligible to receive assistance is an experience that I can’t really quite explain. Their voice trembles and for one moment you can feel their sense of peace knowing that for the next couple of weeks they won’t have to worry about how they’ll pay their bills. I’ve never been more proud to be part of Stand for Children." Georgina

And that’s not all – thanks to the incredible work of Valley of the Sun United Way and their COVID-19 Response fund, the Arizona team applied for and received a grant to provide additional cash assistance for more struggling families.

I am so grateful for the members of the Stand Arizona team, and the lives we are directly impacting. It’s what we’ve done for 24 years nationwide, and for more than 10 years in Arizona. Thank you for your partnership and for supporting Rebecca and the work of her team.

Standing with you,

Jonah Edelman
