Welcoming the New Phi Alpha

Brothers: This past week, more than a hundred and sixty-nine years after our founding, we celebrated another annual convention of Zetes. More than 250 actives and elders were present to participate in leadership training, camaraderie, and most importantly this year, in depth discussions of Zete Forward.

The Grand Chapter meeting on Saturday included my election as your Phi Alpha. For those of you I have not met, allow me to introduce myself. A 1973 graduate, and former undergraduate Phi at the University of Washington, my bio includes four years of active duty as a Surface Warfare Officer in the US Navy, 38 years in business with a focus on sales and marketing, and 11 years as a member of the Executive Committee of Zeta Psi International and Zeta Psi Educational Foundation.

It is an honor and distinct privilege to serve as your Phi Alpha.

Thanks to everyone that made the 169th Annual Zeta Psi Convention in Chicago, IL, a great success.  I don’t think there has been a convention in recent memory where so much was accomplished.  This would not have been possible without the great work by Brant Davis, Alpha Epsilon ’08, who served as this year’s outstanding convention chair.

The Board of Delegates passed a new Constitution, new By Laws, new Risk Management Policy, new Sexual Misconduct Pledge, and agreed to a framework for how we will use alcohol on our premises in the future.  These items – and how we will educate our members about them – are the keys to the ZeteForward program.  When we implement these policies we will have made strong progress towards creating a safer and healthier environment for our members, new members, and guests.  You will see a ton of information coming out over the next few weeks from a variety of sources.

In addition to the hard work of ZeteForward, we had fun all week long – starting with Bro. Joe Maddon, Tau ’76 as our keynote instructor, a night on a Wrigley rooftop, a cruise on Lake Michigan, the presentation of chapter and individual awards, the grand premiere of our new history video, the legacy given to us by Troy Zenevich, Nu ’90, and the election and installation of Phi Alpha CXXXVI, Les Mann, Phi Lambda ’73.

Planning is underway for our 170th Convention which will be held in Louisville, KY on August 16-20, 2017.  The bar is high, but the Committee with the leadership of our hosts, the Tau Gamma chapter at Purdue University, plans to race ahead to the winner’s circle.

We would like to congratulate the Nu Sigma Chapter from Seton Hall University on winning the most coveted award in Zeta Psi, the Comstock Trophy!

Faithfully yours in TKPhi, Lauck Walton, Executive Director
