Raising awareness throughout Cheshire...

One of the key functions of our charity is to raise awareness so that people with Down's syndrome in Cheshire can thrive and achieve their own personal ambition... just like everyone else.

With that in mind, when World Down Syndrome Day rolls around on 21st March we grab the opportunity to step into the limelight with both hands! This year we ran a very successful campaign and much of it is down to you so THANK YOU to our families, fundraisers, volunteers, business partners, charity partners, school partners, grant funders and of course our gorgeous photo stars who took social media by storm. Well done!

Read on for more on the success of this year's campaign below as well as news of a major new grant, our expanding team, plans to make Northwich the first Makaton friendly town in the North West and success for one of our very talented volunteers.

Enjoy!

MAY UPDATE

52,000 BISCUITS SOLD, 53 AWARENESS ASSEMBLIES, £12,000 RAISED AND STILL COUNTING...

Thank you for supporting us with our gingerbread sock biscuit campaign as part of our World Down Syndrome Day celebrations. This year has been a fantastic effort with the total raised so far at £12,000.

Since the campaign was first launched 5 years ago, more than £50,000 has been raised and tens of thousands of Cheshire school children have taken part in awareness assemblies.

Our flagship fundraiser has certainly gathered momentum this year and has achieved a number of accolades including Best Fundraising Campaign at the North West Charity Awards. Emma Harris has been presented with a prestigious Pride of Britain award as well as a Points of Light award from the Prime Minister, Local Hero Award and North West Young Fundraiser Award. It is wonderful that Emma’s achievement and your support have been recognised on such a large scale.

PRIDE OF MANCHESTER AWARDS 2019

We had a wonderful time at the Pride of Manchester awards celebrating Emma Harris' success as Young Fundraiser of the year. Here she is with her dad Chris Harris who is also behind the campaign as well as Michelle Heaton and Danny Jones.

MAKATON FRIENDLY NORTHWICH

As you may have read in the local press and on social media, our bid to make Northwich a Makaton friendly town has begun. Training sessions are being delivered at our offices with businesses learning basic signs as well as ones that are more specific to their services. We'd like to thank Northwich BID, Rotary Vale Royal and Northwich Rotary for funding this project. If you know any local businesses that would be interested in becoming Makaton Friendly please encourage them to visit our website or get in touch by email admin@cdssgroup.org.uk.

WE'RE RECRUITING

We're excited to reveal we're recruiting a new education advocate for East Cheshire thanks to funding from the National Lottery Community Fund and Baily Thomas Charitable Fund. This is an exciting opportunity for an experienced SEN professional to make a significant positive impact for a number of children and their families across Cheshire. You can view the job advert here

NICOLE'S A WINNING VOLUNTEER

Were very proud of our links with the University of Chester so were delighted when graphic design student Nicole Quirk won the Charity's Choice award for her volunteering work with us at their recent Volunteer and Mentoring evening. Nicole has been a wonderful asset to Cheshire Down's Syndrome Support Group and we're so grateful to her for all of the design work she's produced for us.

WE HAVE A DELICIOUS EVENT COMING UP - CAN YOU HELP?

The sun is on its way which makes us think of one of our enjoyable events - delicious Sunday Teas. Last year our volunteers outdid themselves and the standard of cakes was awesome (compliments to the bakers). This year we're at High Legh village hall again on 9th June and are once again appealing for help please? Sign up HERE

A young Tottenham fan received a very special invitation from Spurs striker Harry Kane to lead her team out for their final match of the season.

Harry extended the invite after he was made aware that Ella Markham, 16, had been subjected to online abuse after a video of her dancing was shared online by her dad Neil. Her dad described the experience as “astonishing” after going through a week filled with “highs and lows”.
