APNA is developing an Education and Career Framework for nurses in primary health care, with the aim of improving employment opportunities and recruitment and retention of nurses within, or considering a career in, primary health care settings. 

The online consultations, delivered via webinar and online survey, will provide an opportunity for all nurses and their colleagues to directly influence the Framework's development. The same webinar presentation will be delivered three times, allowing for a national audience to find a suitable time to attend.

National Shingles Vaccination Program
The National Shingles Vaccination Program will commence from 1 November 2016. People eligible to receive the free shingles vaccine include:
  • People aged 70 years of age as an ongoing program
  • People aged 71-79 years of age as a catch-up program until 31 October 2021.
People who are not eligible to receive the vaccine as part of the program can purchase the vaccine on the private market. Read more...
APNA’s Transition to Practice Pilot Program is a 12 month transition support program which aims to increase the knowledge, skills and confidence of nurses commencing work in primary health care. We are inviting nurses new to this setting, and experienced nurses who want to be a clinical and professional mentor, to apply.

  • Undertake an evidence based Workplace Activity Project during the year to support your goals to improve the care of patients
  • Learn about the latest evidence on cardiovascular disease
  • Contribute to the development of new tools, resources and systems to improve care

Position statement on nurses, midwives and vaccination
The Nurse and Midwifery Board Australia (NMDA) has become aware that there are a small number of registered nurses, enrolled nurses and midwives who are promoting anti-vaccination statements to patients and the public via social media which contradict the best available scientific evidence.

Flourishing on the Fleurieu
The Flourishing on the Fleurieu Festival, which is presented by the Southern Fleurieu Positive Ageing Taskforce, and supported by the Victor Harbor, Alexandrina and Yankalilla councils. Was held Wednesday 19 October 2016 at Signal Point Goolwa Wharf Precinct. The biennial Festival is a free community event that celebrates reaching the milestone of retirement and being free to participate in a diverse range of activities offered within the Fleurieu community and encourages more people over 65 to engage with community activities. Ceduna Cardiac Risk Screening                  
The project “kicked off” in July during the NAIDOC week of celebrations, where cardiac screening was held in conjunction with the Cultural Family Fun Day hosted at the Koonibba Football Club rooms.  The iCCnet CHSA team and local Health Workers worked together in engaging and screening participants from the Ceduna Indigenous community.

Royal Flying Doctor Service
Royal Flying Doctor Service (RFDS) Central Operations has been in existence since 1939 and is a key player in the delivery of 24/7 emergency aeromedical and essential primary health care services to people living, working and travelling in rural and remote South and Central Australia. RFDS is a not-for-profit organisation, and while it receives support from Commonwealth, State and Territory governments, the RFDS relies on fundraising and donations to bridge the gap in operational funding, and to finance its capital-raising program for replacement aircraft, medical equipment and other major capital initiatives. Health at the Kangaroo Island Field Days
Country SA PHN Regional Strategies - Central Region team recently had a presence at the Kangaroo Island Field Days. Despite the storms faced by the rest of South Australia, Kangaroo Island was somewhat given a reprieve and was able to go ahead with the 2016 Field Days on 29 September 2016. In partnership with the Kangaroo Island Health Advisory Council (HAC) and Junction Australia, Country SA PHN hosted a health and wellbeing display as part of the KI Field days. Read more...

CATCH Telephone Cardiac Rehabilitation Program supports patients who, for a variety of reasons, are unable to or decline attending a local health service for their cardiac rehabilitation. Delivered solely via the telephone, it allows flexibility with calls scheduled around client’s everyday life, improving their chance of commencing and completing their rehabilitation program. Assessing Fitness to Drive
The new edition comes into effect on 1 October 2016, from which date all assessments conducted for the purpose of driver licensing should be undertaken according to the updated edition.

The Australian Asthma Handbook has been updated to clarify information on asthma and COPD drugs that have become available in the two years since the last update. Version 1.2 clinical amendments and Version 1.2 minor amendments.
