Thank you to all that marched in the annual Pako Festa parade on Saturday.  It was a lovely community event, and I really enjoyed waving to our Ashby family and friends as we wandered down Pakington Street.
Thank you also to Jordyn Hoiles, Nat Biscan, Kathy Hyland, Cory Owens, Kaitlin Mair, Corrie Barclay, Amanda Heitmann, Ange Walsh and Amy Cropley who took part in the parade and assisted in the organisation of this event.
From being so proud of my community upon the completion of this event, it always saddens me to be called up to school on a Saturday night by security/police, or return to school on Monday morning finding damage to our grounds, attempted break ins, rubbish littered and vandalism throughout. This behaviour shows a complete and utter disregard for our school and community members, both past and present.
We have been informed of multiple names of teenagers accessing Ashby over the weekend, and whether a current student or past member of Ashby, I would hope that everyone accessing our school grounds do so with respect.  I would be really disappointed to have to call the police and give them the details of individuals associated with this.
For other members of our community, if you see or hear of people misusing our school grounds, please call 000 and report this to the police.
Thank you again to all of the Ashby families and members of the Presbyterian Church who undertook the working bee two weeks ago.  With over 60 people in attendance, we accomplished so much, and the grounds are starting to shine.  We have further work to complete including the installation of the tunnel and outdoor kitchen and look forward to this coming into fruition in the coming weeks.
Cross Country will take place on March 19 at Fyansford.  As we are building the profile of our Houses (Pako, Lawton, Shannon and Waratah), we are encouraging all students to come dressed in their house colour.  They will get to spend time with all students from their House on the day and be competing to add their name to the Cross-Country Shield.  Parents and friends can join us in cheering on students throughout this morning. We will also be seeking parent volunteers to assist on the day.  Please ensure if you are wanting to volunteer throughout this event or any other event at school, we require a copy of your Working with Children’s Check in the office.  In addition to this there will be a parent, student and staff 1km run.  We would love for as many participants as possible, so parents if you have it in you please wear appropriate clothing on the day, and look out for pocket rocket runner Nat Biscan who will attempt to sprint the whole event!!
All classrooms will be open this Friday for our first ‘Trans-parent-cy’ session, whereby children will be able to show parents/carers what they are learning in class and begin to articulate their learning goals.  Rooms will be open from 2:50-3:15pm and we encourage those available to join us during this time.  Please note this is NOT a Parent Teacher Interview, and staff are not available to speak 1:1 with parents/carers.  This is about spending time with your child to allow them to showcase their learning.

I would also like to personally thank Carlie, Rachel and Kirsten for their huge efforts over the past two years as office bearers for Friends of Ashby.  Their support and dedication to this group and the Ashby community has been really appreciated and I look forward to continuing to work with them and new office bearers in 2020 and beyond.

Dress Up as an Animal Day, supporting Wildlife Victoria

JSC is excited to announce the first fundraiser for the year - A Dress Up as an Animal Day! On the last day of Term 1 (March 27) come to school dressed as an animal, or in casual clothes if you don't wish to dress up. To participate, bring a gold coin donation to support Wildlife Victoria and their work to help animals affected by this summer's bushfires.

APS “Trans-PARENT-cy” Afternoons
As a school we are excited to inform you that throughout the course of the year, parents/caregivers will be invited into the learning spaces of their children so that their child can share their learning goals, growth and achievement. This is following feedback that was received in 2019 when Ashby was involved in the School Review Process – whereby parents/caregivers stated that they would like greater opportunities to discuss the learning and progress being made by their child.
The “Trans-PARENT-cy” afternoons will allow parents/caregivers the opportunity to discuss with their child the following;
  • What learning goals have been set and/or achieved?
  •  What learning is being undertaken for students to achieve their goals?
  • Students articulating how they are going to achieve their learning goal, as well as, knowing when that goal is achieved.
There will be 3 “Trans-PARENT-cy” afternoons this semester. Dates and times are listed below.
  • Term 1, Week 6: Friday 6th March
  • Term 2, Week 4: Friday 8th May
  • Term 2, Week 8: Friday 5th June
    • All sessions will run from 2:50pm – 3:15pm.
Please note, the “Trans-PARENT-cy” afternoons are not times for parent/teacher interviews. The focus of the afternoons is for parents and students to engage in conversation about learning, growth and achievement as stated. More information will be shared in the coming weeks.
Last Tuesday we held the 2020 AGM and had a fantastic turnout. Thank you so much to the parents and friends who came, and to the couple of apologies. We really appreciate your time and input. While we covered the formalities, it was also a really fun night.
I am incredibly pleased to announce the new Friends of Ashby office bearers for 2020;
  • President: Jess Sharp (Abby, Grade 6 and Tom, Grade 3)
  • Vice President: Rebecca Hook (Matilda, Prep)
  • Secretary: Kristy Akrigg (Evie, Grade 1)
  • Treasurer: Kirsten George (Emily, Grade 2)
Along with a great team of committed members, FoA is in fantastic hands this year! We discussed a number of fun, social events that will be held over the year, so keep an eye out in the newsletter and Facebook page for updates. The minutes of the meeting are freely available; either via the FoA Messenger group or touch base with the office.
Movie Night 2020
On Friday 20 March we’ll be holding our annual Ashby Movie Night. Tickets will be available via CompassTix; $7 dollars each or 4 for $24. Each ticket comes with one popcorn and one drink. The Movie will be announced SOON! We will also be holding our annual Box Car competition, so start planning and collecting your boxes!
On a personal note, thank you to Carlie, Rachel, Kirsten and the FoA committee and volunteers for a rewarding and successful 2019. Also thank you to Ms Bone, Amy, Belinda and the staff who showed so much support for the events we have held and were always willing to jump on the end of a pair of tongs for a BBQ or any set-up or clean-up. I believe FoA helps keep the Ashby community vibe vibrant, inclusive and energetic, and it’s been such a pleasure to be a part of.
May 2020 be even bigger and better!
