ASHBY: ALWAYS STRIVING TO EXCEL

FROM THE PRINCIPAL

It has been exciting to have P-2 students onsite this past week. The joy on faces as they entered the school grounds was great to see. Playing in the school yard with friends, reconnecting and enjoying all things that you should be able to when attending school.

I would like to take this opportunity to thank the Friends of Ashby group who have funded over $2000.00 on display boards for the classrooms and hallway. We are really lucky to have a dedicated parents and friends group that support the learning environment and community here at Ashby providing fresh fruit each Friday, and fundraising for events such as Mother’s Day/ special person breakfasts, Father’s Day/ special person events etc.
If you would like some more information about the Friends of Ashby Group, please search them on Facebook and request to join their page.

Our new multi-purpose sensory space has been installed and almost ready for action. This is an amazing space to support students with a wide range of sensory/ additional needs or disabilities, exposing them to a soothing and stimulating environment. The room is designed to deliver stimuli to various senses, including lighting effects, colour, sound, music, scents etc.
The purpose of this space is to develop self-confidence, achieve a sense of self control, encourage exploration and creativity, improving attention span and the senses. It promotes choice and effect, stimulation and relaxation while potentially reducing challenging exhibited behaviours, while increasing assertiveness, confidence, and motivation. We look forward to introducing multiple students to this room over the coming weeks.

I would like to thank Ian (grandfather of Matilda) for assisting in maintaining the school grounds, Damien (father of Charlotte) for mowing the oval at the front of the school and my mother Kathie for bringing the garden beds at the old entrance of the school building back to life following the building works. If there are any parents/ carers that are able to commit to assist with mowing, weeding etc. please see the office to determine an area to help maintain over the winter months.

I would also like to acknowledge David or ‘Buzza’ as we know him, our maintenance guru, who unfortunately lost his wife a few weeks ago following a battle with Motor Neurone Disease. As an Ashby community we let him know we were very sorry for his loss and thinking of him and his family at this time.

FAMILY REFLECTIONS
My son is a preppy, and he is a young prep at that. Because of this I was worried that there might be some things that he might be behind on but decided to challenge him and start him early.
I am blown away at the capacity of young kids to learn. They are absolutely like little sponges. I'm glad I started him young.

We need to remember that the kids are watching us, copying our behaviour and use of language and absorbing it all, and it’s shaping them! We need to be our best so that they can be their best.

The pandemic has happened at a pivotal time in his learning, but I think it might help his resilience and ability to cope with change. I’ve enjoyed the opportunity to attempt to teach him. I miss him now that he is back at school, but it’s an environment he loves, and he was definitely lacking social interactions at home which he gets in spades at school.

Home schooling definitely had its challenges. He was at times hard to engage, and it definitely made me appreciate the role of teacher so much more.
