Tips for being more friendly and social

Jesus was a master at making friends and keeping them. His method worked for him 2000 years ago and it still works with us today! But one need not exude Jesus' magnetic personality in order to make new friends. So, what are some basic things Jesus did that we can do, too?

Focus on others, not yourself. The key to connecting to other people is by showing interest in them. When you’re truly interested in someone else’s thoughts, feelings, experiences, and opinions, it shows—and they’ll like you for it. You’ll make far more friends by showing your interest rather than trying to get people interested in you. Compassion goes a LONG way!

Listen more. Talk less. If Jesus had a phone...I bet he'd switch it off. Make an effort to truly listen to the other person. By paying close attention to what they say, do, and how they interact, you’ll quickly get to know them. Little things go a long way, such as remembering someone’s preferences, the stories they’ve told you, and what’s going on in their life.

  • 10 kittens or 3 baby sloths?
  • Are your hands the same size?
  • Have you ever broken a bone? Tell me about it!
  • If you could do anything for the rest of your life, what would that be?
  • If you could live anywhere in the world for a year, where would it be?
From here it is always appropriate to ask someone about their faith and their life experiences with Jesus. Ask, "how is God shaping you these days?" or "who are some people He has sent you to love?"
