Social Distant Shabbat Visits
Mercaz's physical space is closed until future recommendations allow us to open. This is not an easy time. We remain a community committed to growth and care and encourage you to reach out to any of our leadership.
Sadly, we will not be able to hold the Shavuaton this year. We look forward to having more opportunities for Shabbatot and Shavuatot in the future. Stay tuned for Shavuot happenings as they come together.
Meet the Members: Jane Becker, Jason Kintzer and Family
Where are you from?
Jason is from LONG BEACH, as in Long Beach, NY. He will tell you that is the REAL Long Beach. Jane is from Long Island City, Queens.
What brought you to Seattle?
We came to Seattle for Jane to participate in the Adolescent Medicine Fellowship at the University of Washington. We were choosing between Seattle and San Francisco. Seattle won out because of the better vegan options at the Hospital’s cafeteria.
Can you share a good travel memory?
Jason and I traveled to Fiji, New Zealand and Australia in 1986- When we left Nadi, on the main island of Fiji, we flew in a 4 seat plane to Vandalu, an outer island with no roads or electricity, to stay with the chief of a remote village. All we had was a letter, written in Fijian, which introduced us to the chief. We had no idea what we were in for. We landed on a grassy field and then we walked thru water to meet a small motorboat which whisked us to a remote part of the island. On the way we saw amazing wildlife, most remarkably, flying fish. Upon arriving to our village, we were greeted by dozens of children wading in the ocean and eating small crustaceans right from the water (we passed on that experience). We were brought to a dark thatched hut, where the elders of the village were sitting on the floor, partaking in the national Fijian ritual of drinking yagona. Jane was surely the only woman in the hut, but she joined in the ritual. That was only the beginning of a travel week that was nothing short of amazing. Spoiler alert: The king of the island invited us to make our home on the island.
What's your favorite current boardgame or hobby?
Our favorite hobby, for the last 27 years has been spending time with our kids, BH.
Any special way that you are coping with the current pandemic?
How we are coping with the pandemic is very fluid, some days we do a better job than others…walks have been helpful- and some days have had way too much screen time. Many of us in our family are counting the omer and learning about the middot of the day. That has been very spiritually uplifting-not a moment too soon.
What appeals to you about Mercaz and the Northend community?
We have really love taking part in Mercaz and watching it grow and thrive as a multigenerational, open, vibrant community, that is welcoming new families and babies all the time. We love all the new friends we have made and really appreciate the energy and warmth of Rabbi Avi and Rachel.
