Week 4, Semester 1

Education as a spiritual journey
from Gayle Kent,
Chief Community Life Officer  (gaylek@morling.edu.au)

In his book, To know as we are known – education as a spiritual journey, Parker Palmer reflects how the discipline of study is given life and meaning when exercised alongside prayer and reflection, and shaped by the life of a gathered community.

Formative education gives space and opportunity to dive into texts, explore the unknown, to be challenged by diverse views, and to seek wisdom in truth. Whether you are in your first or your last semester, remember that you are not, and should not, be alone in this spiritual journey of discovery and learning.

Why not take some time this week to ask someone to reflect and pray with you about the ways that God is shaping you this semester.

A prayer as we study

As we open our books, our laptops, our notes:
Open our minds, our hearts, our hands.
As we find quiet places to work:
Quieten our distractions, our unrealistic to-do lists,
our negative self talk that says "you don't have anything to say".

Open our ears to your voice,
Allow your truth to take root in our thoughts and actions,
Open our eyes to your world, to our families, to our neighbourhoods.

Where we are arrogant and flippant, bless us with humility and gravity,
Where we are tired and bewildered, bless us with energy and insight,
Where there is danger and dissent, bless us with protection and confidence in you.

Form us to be your people,
Fill us with your Spirit,
Challenge us by your holiness and grace,
Lead us into truth and freedom,
Compel us with your hope,
Through Christ our Lord.
Amen

Ezra Centre
Ezra means '"Helper"', it is one of the core aims of our Centre, to come alongside those who are struggling and to help them on their journey. We offer a range of services, such as Individual, Child and Adolescent, Family and Couple Therapy. We also have experienced Clinical Supervisors for those requiring supervision.

Affordable counselling can be accessed by seeing our Intern Counsellor ($15 per hour) who works under direct supervision. We also have qualified Clinical Counsellors who work out of Ezra, their fees range between $80 - $120.
Please call The Ezra Centre on 8197 1746 or email admin@ezra.org.au to make an appointment
Perth-Vose campus chapel
Join us for Chapel at the Perth-Vose Campus every Wednesday morning during teaching weeks from 11am-12pm. Staff and students attend to share a time of worship and prayer and to hear from staff, missionaries, students and community leaders.
Perth-Vose community lunches
The stay for Community Lunch every Wednesday at 12pm on the Perth Vose Campus (during teaching weeks). You can bring your own lunch, or bring $5 and eat what the Student Team or Staff have prepared (pasta, toasties, chicken rolls, pizza etc.). This is a great time to make connections with your fellow students and lecturers, start up discussions, meet new people and become part of our community.
Encourage one another!
All new students studying at the Perth-Vose campus (including those who missed out last year due to COVID) are encouraged to attend our Commencement and Conferral service as there will be an opportunity to acknowledge and pray for our new students during the service. Due to capacity restrictions still being in place for the ceremonies at the Sydney campus we will only be able to fit in those who are graduating. New students will be listed in our Graduation booklet and acknowledged. The Sydney campus ceremonies will also be livestreamed so please consider how you can encourage those who have completed their studies.

Are you able to come help out at Sydney Graduation this year?
Graduation is on the 29th of March, we are holding 2 ceremonies this year one at 3pm the other at 7pm and we need help with both! We need ushers, parking attendants, help with robing, and help with the food. If you can and want to help please send Eva Hoek an email to let her know you're available and which ceremonies you can help out with (evah@morling.edu.au)
Sydney campus meals
Our Sydney campus has an online ordering system for meals. Lunch is available Monday to Friday for times when you are on the Sydney campus and Dinner is available on Wednesday if you have a class on that night.  You must place your meal orders by Wednesday of the week prior to when you require a meal. This is to allow the catering staff adequate time to place orders with suppliers. Simple instructions including a video are available on Moodle here.

Considering Baptist Accreditation in NSW or the ACT?Baptist NSW & ACT

If you are sensing that God is leading you to serve as an accredited Baptist ministry in NSW or the ACT then you will need to attend a Pre-application Interest Meeting. This is necessary to be able to move forward with accreditation and seek acceptance as an Accreditation Candidate. Note, that the general time period between application and accreditation is normally at least 2 years (and may involve further study).

The next session for this year will be held Thursday 25th March 2021, 4pm to 5.30pm- face-to-face in Library Seminar Room, MALC L1 (dependent on NSW Health directives at that time) or online via ZOOM. For students who are unable to make one of these sessions, please contact Jenny Casey – jcasey@nswactbaptists.org.au. For general information about training, events and processes surrounding NSW and ACT Baptist accreditation you can find out more here. You can also contact Keith Mitchell, Morling’s Baptist Accreditation Adviser KeithM@morling.edu.au.
