Community Week

Reading Bible togetherCommunity and the Indwelling Word
from David Staring, Chief Academic Officer  (

This week at Morling is Community Week. Across both of our campuses and in all three of our faculties, online and face-to-face, Community Week involves opportunities for us to connect with each other and be encouraged and equipped for the semester ahead.

Last week’s @Morling included a reminder from Stuart Adamson about the indispensable role that the word of God plays in the life of a Christian. This week I want to pick up that thread and develop it a little further, relating it not only to our lives as individuals but also to our culture and interactions as a community.

The image that comes to mind for me is Paul’s words in Colossians 3:16: “Let the message of Christ dwell among you richly as you teach and admonish one another with all wisdom through psalms, hymns, and songs from the Spirit, singing to God with gratitude in your hearts.”

Paul’s depiction of the gospel as a message that is to “dwell in you richly” tells us not only about both God’s purpose for the community (that it be inhabited and pervasively shaped by the indwelling word) but also about God’s purpose for his word (that it be lived and displayed in the life of a community).

The word of Christ contains a wisdom that sheds light on every part of life; its scope is universal; its message (Col 1:23) is for “every creature under heaven.” But it also has a home—a community of people that it inhabits and makes its dwelling in. The wisdom that we teach in an institution like Morling should never be reduced to a set of ideas or a bundle of skills and competencies. It exists to be embodied in the lives of those who believe it, in the relationships between them and the way they live their lives. That’s one of the reasons why so much of the New Testament consists of letters written to churches. And it’s one of the reasons why Jesus, who never wrote a book, entrusted his message to a community of disciples. The word of Christ makes its home within the community of God’s people.

This week gives us a chance to live that out a little better.

Morling is offering a 1 hour online orientation for new students (all courses and study modes) who haven’t studied with us before, or who are unfamiliar with our online learning environment and support resources. Two sessions will be held on Tuesday 16th February, at 7:30pm and 9:30pm (Sydney time) to cater for students in different time-zones. The same content will be delivered in both sessions, so you only need to attend one of these.

The use of a webcam and mic by students is optional. A recording will be made available on Moodle for students who are unable to attend or wish to refer back to it at a later date.

Important! Discipleship Groups for all Bible and Theology Discipleship Groups for Bible and Theology Students – Sydney campus and Online students

At Morling, we don’t want you to go it alone! For Bible and Theology (BAT) students in Sydney and online, an important and ongoing aspect of this is being part of a Discipleship Group. Although not for ACT credit, participation in a group is a vital part of your overall development as a Christian who is training for future ministry. For those in our Perth-Vose campus, you will continue to meet in the GSF group on Wednesday mornings.

For those on the Sydney on-campus or online, you will meet once a week with other students in a small group led by one of our wonderful faculty. You will share together in your journey as a student and grow in your personal and ministry walk. Participation in a Discipleship Group is required for all BAT fulltime students and NSW&ACT Baptist accreditation candidates, and strongly encouraged for all scholarship recipients and part-time students. CCSC and EDU students are very welcome to join as well if they are able to.
The groups will begin in Week 2 of semester. But you need to sign up now, choosing one of the available timeslots/options by registering here.

For Morling Bible and Theology and CCSC students studying in 2021 please register for Perlego by clicking HERE (not available for cross-institutional students)...
    What’s Perlego?
Perlego describes itself as the “Spotify for books,” which pretty much explains the concept. A subscription gives you access to thousands of textbooks in ebook format, from a wide range of publishers. There are currently over 32,000 titles in the Theology and Religion category, and new publishers are being signed up all the time.
How will Perlego complement existing library resources?
The library currently has ebooks that it owns, as well as subscriptions to the EBSCO Religion collection and Proquest rental ebooks. Perlego will be in addition to these, providing a much wider range of ebooks that can be used as additional readings in units as well as assignment resources.
Please contact the if you have any questions.

Can't find your textbook on Perlego? See if Koorong has it!
