After a momentous closing night of The Merchant of Venice in the Venice Ghetto, Colombari traveled to Bassano del Grappa where it performed for a full house at the Operaeste Festival Veneto (see curtain call above). The following day, the company travelled to Padova to perform a 70-minute version of the play in the Padova High Security Prison, that included inmates in the final action scene against Shylock.
An astonishingly moving way to end our time in Italy, the Padova performance was also attended by municipal officials including the Mayor. As a result, Director Karin Coonrod has committed to making prison performances part of her personal mission as a theater maker.
In the US, at the end of August, Karin was invited to deliver a talk entitled Shylock Returns to the Ghetto for students, faculty and the larger Dartmouth College community.
Coming up next, a presentation of the complete Merchant in Venice experience including behind the scenes photographs by Andrea Messana and clips from filmmakers Ted Hardin and Elizabeth Coffman's upcoming documentary, The Making of The Merchant in Venice. The evening will be moderated by Karin and is sponsored by the Bogliasco Foundation. It will be held at NYU's Casa Italiana in NYC on October 6th.
We look forward to sharing this with all who can attend. Details and RSVP link are below.
