A review of the ASTRO 2018 highlights involving our partner companies

Did you know?

ASTRO's roots date back slightly more than a half-century. It all began in the mid-1950s, when America's radiotherapists started gathering at a Chicago restaurant each November or December while attending the annual meeting of the Radiological Society of North America (RSNA). In 1955, some of the most important people practising radiation therapy in the United States met at Barney's Market Club on Randolph Street forming the nucleus for what would become the largest and most influential society of radiation oncologists in the world.

RaySearch to demonstrate the power of automation with new machine learning applications at ASTRO
During October 21- 23, RaySearch will exhibit its latest advances in oncology software at the ASTRO 2018 annual meeting in San Antonio, Texas, US. RaySearch is putting a strong focus on making smarter and faster software through machine learning and user-friendly tools to enable optimal use of the clinical resources. RaySearch will show its latest development in machine learning technology and automation in both RayStation*, the innovative treatment planning system (TPS) and RayCare*, the groundbreaking oncology information system (OIS). Machine learning and automation in RayStation

With its in-house machine learning department, RaySearch is currently developing machine learning and deep learning prototypes for areas such as treatment plan generation, organ segmentation and target volume estimation. RaySearch is also developing techniques for efficient large-scale data extraction and analysis. The first clinical applications of machine learning are automated treatment planning and automated organ segmentation and will be included in the next RayStation release* in December. These applications will revolutionize the way radiation oncology treatment planning is done and offer an enormous efficiency boost for cancer clinics. Elekta introduces strategy for precision radiation medicine at ASTRO Annual Meeting

Elekta Unity and MOSAIQ Plaza exemplify Elekta's ability to provide clinicians with systems to optimize care and to create more moments that matter for patients

At the American Society for Radiation Oncology (ASTRO) Annual Meeting, October 21-24 in San Antonio, Elekta (EKTA-B.ST) will introduce MOSAIQ Plaza, Elekta’s suite of data-focused integrative oncology software, and highlight the company’s comprehensive strategy for precision radiation medicine. This strategy integrates Elekta’s dual commitments to enabling complex radiation therapy treatment regimens while simplifying and streamlining the delivery of care. Elekta Unity*, the company’s transformative magnetic resonance radiation therapy (MR/RT) system and MOSAIQ Plaza are the most recent evidence of Elekta’s ability to fulfill these commitments.

Varian Outlines Strategy for AI-Driven Multimodality Adaptive Radiotherapy Suite

During its Users Meeting at the 2018 American Society for Radiation Oncology (ASTRO) Annual Meeting, Varian shared details of its development work on an artificial intelligence (AI)-driven multimodality adaptive radiotherapy treatment suite that is being designed to deliver high quality treatments, and incorporates all types of imaging (MR, PET, CT) without compromise.

During his presentation at the meeting, Ed Vertatschitsch, vice president of Global Portfolio Solutions at Varian, outlined how the AI-driven multimodality suite is being designed to provide significant workflow improvements for clinicians and make it possible for a busy clinic to offer adaptive therapy to every patient that would benefit.

"We are creating a treatment suite that includes treatment planning, treatment delivery, and patient monitoring to fuel the next generation of radiation therapy," stated Vertatschitsch. "We are doing this through multimodality imaging available at the console in combination with next generation AI-driven auto-segmentation and treatment planning.  We will make use of state of the art treatment delivery including 17-second high-resolution kV iterative cone-beam CT imaging and our advanced multi-leaf collimator design to enable delivery arcs that require just 30-seconds."

Varian Introduces New ProBeam 360° Proton Therapy System
Varian today announced its new single-room proton therapy system, ProBeam® 360°. With a 30
percent smaller footprint than the previous system, ProBeam 360° offers uncompromised clinical capabilities while reducing vault construction costs by approximately 25 percent. The new system has a 360-degree rotating gantry, the most powerful particle accelerator available today to treat cancer, iterative cone-beam CT imaging and high-definition pencil-beam scanning technology. The system can also provide clinicians a viable path to potential next-generation treatments such as Flash therapy.

RayStation awarded treatment planning system tender at Canadian cancer
Centre intégré de cancérologie de Laval, Montreal, Canada, has selected RayStation through the public tender process as its sole treatment planning system, replacing existing systems. The center welcomes residents of Laval and the surrounding areas since 2011.
Centre intégré de cancérologie de Laval is equipped with four linacs, all Elekta Synergy with Agility MLC, as well as advanced imaging systems such as CT, PET-CT and MRI. The
center plans for expansion with an additional linac to treat specialized cases.

Allegheny Health Network Cancer Institute invests in Elekta’s MR-linac research system

Cancer Institute to install Elekta technology, using MRI imaging to provide precise radiation delivery

Allegheny Health Network (AHN) Cancer Institute has entered into a research agreement with Elekta, under which AHN will utilize Elekta’s magnetic resonance radiation therapy system (MR/RT), Elekta Unity, to investigate new treatment standards, imaging protocols and treatment planning methodologies for a variety of cancers. Elekta Unity is currently pending 510(k) clearance with the U.S. Food and Drug Administration.

Provision Cares Proton Therapy Nashville uses
RayCare to treat first patient
Provision Cares Proton Therapy Nashville, the newest member of the Provision CARES Cancer Network, successfully treated their first patient on October 8, utilizing the treatment planning system RayStation and the oncology information system (OIS)
RayCare* to plan and manage its proton treatments. The brand-new center has been using RayCare together with RayStation since its opening in July this year.

Varian and GenesisCare to Form Strategic Partnership for Cancer Care Research and Increased Access to Care
Varian and GenesisCare, a leading provider of cancer care treatment, today announced the signing of a memorandum of understanding (MoU) to form a strategic partnership for cancer care research and to increase access to advanced cancer care in Australia, the United Kingdom and Spain. The relationship is intended to cover up to a total of 70 Varian linear accelerators and Varian Eclipse™ treatment planning software as the preferred GenesisCare solution provider globally.  It will also include support of skin cancer clinical trials utilizing Varian RapidArc technology and the development of software for the emerging field of theranostics.

Holland Proton Therapy Centre treats
first patient using RayStation
Holland Proton Therapy Centre (HollandPTC) has started treating patients using RayStation as the treatment planning solution, in combination with the Varian ProBeam® System and the Varian ARIA® oncology information system.
Holland PTC was the first proton therapy
center established in the Netherlands. RayStation was selected over other treatment planning alternatives following an extensive tender process in 2016. RayStation received the highest assessment in several key areas, including adaptive therapy, connectivity, automation and scripting, user experience, and plan optimization. The agreement between RaySearch and HollandPTC includes both clinical and research licenses.

user-centered product design award for its MR-linac, Elekta Unity
Award affirms Elekta's and DCA's ability to innovate new technology while remaining focused on physician and patient needs
Elekta and DCA Design International Ltd have won the prestigious Human Factors and Ergonomics Society (HFES) Stanley H. Caplan User-Centered Product Design Award 2018 for Elekta Unity, Elekta’s MR-linac. Elekta Unity combines high-field 1.5 Tesla MR imaging, precision radiation therapy and intelligent software, giving clinicians the previously unattainable ability to see what they treat in real time. This U.S.-based award recognizes outstanding and innovative practice in product design, alongside the user research and design methods used to both develop and evaluate the design from the early product vision to the commercially available system, which received CE-mark in June 2018.

treatment of locally advanced gastric cancers.
