Students are reading and writing well and engaging in neat projects throughout the building. A few highlights this week are second graders studying heroes, and fourth graders designing and writing about animals adapted for particular environments. Do talk about the qualities you look for in a hero and share your heroes on our PTA bulletin board! Hearts went home to all students and the board is filling up quickly. It’s lovely to see children writing their mom’s and dad’s are heroes and teachers too!
Looking forward our kindergarten team will collaborate with IS183 in early February to make a mural about their year long study of trees. The Lenox Garden Club will also donate a tree to plant with students on the playground. We will work together to water it through the spring with a kindergarten bucket brigade.
This is a good time to check in with your child about her/ his reading life. Many teachers have sent home reading logs this week and we are encouraging nightly reading to self and also read aloud with family members. Our hope for you is to curl up with a good book and enjoy winter! If you need books let us know. We have a supply of free books in the main office, teachers will send home “just right” books for reading to self, and students may also check out multiple books from our Muddy Brook library.

Chess Club News
Chess players: You are all playing wonderfully. Your chess games are improving every week. I am amazed at what excellent chess you are all playing. Monday and Wednesday morning are a joy for me.
February 1st is the deadline for signing up for this year's chess tournament. You must have a parental permission slip signed by then if you want to be in the tournament. You can get a permission slip from me or Christine Kelly in the office.
By this Monday, both the Muddy Brook Office and I will have a list of every student who has currently signed up for the tournament. So, if you can't remember if you turned in your form, of if you are afraid that you or I may have misplaced your form, you can check your status with me or Christine Kelly after Monday. . We will not be accepting new parental permission slips for the Tournament after February 1st. New chess players and students just learning the game are always welcome at CHESS CLUB every Monday and Wednesday morning.
