We are all excited for the start of school on Wednesday, August 28. All teachers and staff will be returning on Monday for some opening meetings, trainings and to put the final touches on classrooms in anticipation of the return of students. Remember on Tuesday, the 27th from 2:30 to 3:30, we will be opening the school to students and families who may wish to get a sneak peak at classrooms and meet new teachers. Families may use the back playground as parking for this event.
Please review the following information and reminders about the first days of school:
First Day Arrival: Our school day begins at 8:35 and on the first day all students will gather with their class groups near the back playground and they will enter together as a class with their teachers and other staff. Parents dropping off between 8:25 and 8:35 may park and bring students back to the playground or they may drop off at the circle and students will be directed through the building to the play ground by school staff.
Early Arrival Option: Parents may avail themselves of the 8:00 before-school care program (K-4 only) starting on the first day. Parents using this program should park, enter the building with the child, and sign in. Students in before-school care will be supervised in the library until it's time to join their classmates.
Bus Info: Many route numbers have changed. Please contact Christine Kelly at email@example.com to confirm the number of your bus route or call Massini Bus at 413-229-7962. ALL students residing with the district have been assigned a bus or van. If you choose to pick up your child every day instead of him/her taking the bus, please contact Christine prior to the start of school so that change can be made so dismissal will be smooth.
General Arrival Reminders: PLEASE do not leave vehicles unattended in the drop-off circle. Especially during the first days, please be patient. There is higher traffic volume in the first days and it may take longer to pass through the drop-off circle. Please have your children ready for drop-off when you arrive at the circle. Drive slowly and cautiously in the circle and in the parking lot.
Dismissal is at 3:15. Students riding buses depart the school at about 3:25 but there may be some delays on the first days. Remember that there must be an adult at the stop to receive riders when they get off. Walkers (students not riding buses) report to the gym at dismissal. Parents coming into the building for pick-up will find Ms. Wool. She will call your child from the gym for pick-up. Parents using the valet pick-up circle should immediately turn right upon entering the lot. Drive all the way around the parking area and join the pick-up line. Nurse Becki will identify who you are picking up and will call the gym for the student. Again, this process can be significantly slower on the first days as Nurse Becki learns parents, cars, and their matching students. Thank you for your patience.
Change in Dismissal Plans: Please do not call or e-mail the teacher with changes to pick-up and dismissal plans. Teachers are completely occupied during the school day and may not have time to check e-mail or voice mail. Christine or Kortney in our office (413-644-2350) are the primary contacts for changes in dismissal plans.
Lunch forms: Applications for free and reduced cost school lunch are in the office. You may pick one up or we can send one home with your child. One form per family is all that is required.
Chess Club begins on the first day! Gene Kalish is ready for another exciting year of chess and encourages all interested students to attend. Check out Mr. Kalish's chess problem below. This year you will see periodic chess puzzles and problems in our Week-at-a-Glance (WAAG) newsletter.
Looking ahead: PTA Ice Cream Social. Come and meet your friends and be a part of our growing school community at this fun family event on September 12th at 5:30pm.
Below please find a list of important calendar events for this school year. Please make note again of upcoming half days and days when school is closed for staff in-services.
We look forward to seeing you soon!
