Dear Families,
Spring is in the air and our second graders are thinking about the earth and writing poems. Here’s one from Alexander in Ms. Finnerty’s class:
I think of a garden hose as a snake.
I think of a garden hose as a snake.
A garden hose is a snake
so wet
and slithers
and its nozzle
as a head
And its long circular shape
I think of a gardening hose as a snake
Safe Arrival and Dismissal
Drop off can be a challenging time and we’ve come up with some ideas to try to make it easier for everyone.
If you’re dropping off  in the morning before 8:30 or picking up at the end of the regular day and for Project Connection, please park in a space and come in to sign your child/children in or out.  This is important for kids’ safety.
Starting Monday, if you are dropping off students between 8:30 and 8:40 feel free to drop them off in the loop near the front door to walk into the building on their own.  We will have staff there to greet them.
Whatever you do, please don’t park in the loop or leave cars unattended or idling. Doing so creates a safety hazard. Firefighters wouldn’t be able to get to the hydrant or school in the event of an emergency.  Additionally, idling cars aren’t good for kids with asthma or the environment.

We hope this shift goes great.  We’ll remind people all next week.  After the break, we’ll be a little firmer.
Working together, we can make drops offs better.
Thank you for your help with this and Happy Spring!

Chess Club News

As most of you know, the Annual Muddy Brook Chess Tournament is currently taking place and many fine chess matches are being played every Monday, Wednesday and Friday mornings.   The regular Chess Club is still available for those who want to learn how to play chess or play just for fun every Monday and Wednesday morning.  Please come and join us.
The play in the chess tournament has been excellent.   The one part of the game where students seem a little weak is, however,  the end game.   Some students have trouble making the final checkmate.  If students want to improve their game, I recommend they study how to checkmate with a limited number of pieces.   One can go to the internet and look up, "How to checkmate with two rooks", "How to checkmate with a king and a queen" or "How to checkmate with a queen and a knight".  A little bit of this type of study will go a long way in improving one's chess game.
