“The Club for Owners and Enthusiasts of Britain’s finest specialist car manufacturer”
No 16. March 2020
It is almost impossible these days to open a newspaper or turn on the TV without mention of the Coronavirus Covid-19 pandemic. Countries have been locked down, businesses closed, and many lives have been lost. It is something that has affected every single one of us in one way or another and looks to continue for the near future. Here at the RMC our thoughts are with those who have been affected. We wish anyone who may contract it a speedy and healthy recovery and hope that everyone stays safe.
Thankfully there are things to celebrate, as 2020 marks the 85th Anniversary of Reliant being formed, although for those of us at a certain age, it is perhaps stranger to think that Reliant ceased manufacturing cars and closed its doors for the final time 19 years ago, How time flies. We will be celebrating the 85th Anniversary in our next club magazine (due in June 2020) and we invite everyone to send in there favourite Reliant stories or memories to us - no matter how short or long it may be, we will feature all of them
Whilst we are looking at anniversaries, 2020 also sees the 130th birthday of Reliant co-founder Tom Williams born in Church Street, Tamworth in March 1890. A lesser known fact is that his birthplace is also the same spot where the annual Reliant gathering of vehicles is held in Tamworth every year. 2020 also brings with it the 50th Anniversary of the Bond Bug, a fun 3-wheeler designed by Reliant using the Bond name, although Bond as in Bond Cars Ltd. that Reliant bought out in 1969 and not, as some people believe, the 007 kind. .
As mentioned above, please stay safe and take care,
Tom Williams (Centre) with some of the Reliant vehicles that were produced during his life at Reliant. (1935 - 1964) Our thanks to Denise Wileman for this image that was drawn as a present for her grandfather, Bill Taylor, when he retired from Reliant in 1973.
RMC in Brazil
The RMC has many members around the world and so we were delighted to make contact with Novo Meio in Brazil who were planning to make a little film about Reliant for their members, The article, that also details the Reliant Motor Club, and the film can be seen here. (Please note, you may wish to use a web browser like Google Chrome where the article can be translated into English.)
Toilet Roll Stampede
Now, we have to admit we didn't think we would ever be talking about toilet rolls in a RMC Newsletter although with the Coronavirus Covid-19 currently working its way around the globe, it appears that the one must have thing is toilet rolls - so much so that in some places people are even fighting over it as some people take way more than they need.
Here at the RMC we thought maybe we should help members out with their very own personalised RMC toilet paper, not so much for those with the Coronavirus but for those with the Car-owner virus for which those inflicted keep on buying old cars. However, at around £7 a roll we did not think we would get many takers - although, that said, if the scramble for toilet rolls gets any crazier, £7 might be the going rate for one!
Staffordshire Past Track
Last month the RMC was featured on the Staffordshire Past Track website and their social media pages when they featured a photo of the Reliant Sabra prototype. The RMC works with a number of historical societies including Staffordshire Past Track which is a large archive of images from the Staffordshire area.
On Staffordshire Past Track you can explore photographs, images, film clips, maps and audio clips using a range of easy to use search tools. You can also visit a range of on-line exhibitons on aspects of Staffordshire's history. Managed by Staffordshire County Council's Archives & Heritage Service. The RMC has provided them with a number of Reliant images that can all be found on their website.
A break from Home Learning
Due to the Coronavirus most schools in the UK are now closed or will be within the next day or so. Whilst taking a break from Home Learning, why not print off this superb "colour me" picture drawn by Tamworth artist Tracey Flynn that features Tamworth Landmarks and of course also includes the Reliant Robin.
Once coloured in, why not take a photo and send it to us. We will feature the best ones in our next magazine and also see if we can find a nice prize for the winner.
Please send a photo to firstname.lastname@example.org and include the name and age. Closing date for entries is midnight April 30th 2020.
A reminder to all our members looking for insurance for their vehicles. We have partnered with classicline insurance to find the best deal and better still, RMC members receive 10% off. To find out more information visit their website at www.classiclineinsurance.co.uk
