2020 - Annus horribilis
Some of you, of a certain age, may recall Her Majesty the Queen saying in 1992 that the year wasn't a good one and that it was in fact Annus horribilis. When I was younger, 2020 sounded so futuristic and yet I think given how 2020 has gone with Covid-19 the year hasn't been a pleasant one and so, to quote Her Majesty, it was indeed Annus horribilis. At least now Science has come to the rescue and the UK is leading with the world's first Covid-19 vaccine program. All being well, this time next year things will have returned to some sort of normality.
It has been wonderful to see so many new members and indeed so many from all around the world, it is amazing to think how far reaching the club is. It was also fantastic to see the 400th member join recently especially as we head towards 2021 which will be the 5th Anniversary of the Reliant Motor Club.
With all the Covid-19 restrictions and loss of loved ones, Christmas will be especially tough for some this year. No matter where you are or what you do, our thoughts are with you and we hope that everyone has the best Christmas they can and remains safe.
We found this wonderful photo on the Internet from the Beamish Collection. It dates back to 1957 and shows Father Christmas arriving at Peterlee in the back of a Reliant Regal Mk II. Everyone in the photo looks so excited to see him.
Christmas card from
HRH The Princess Royal
It is always a great honour for us to receive a Christmas card from our Honorary Member: HRH The Princess Royal. This year the card contained the following message for all RMC members:
With Best Wishes for a Happy Christmas and a Peaceful and Heathy New Year from Anne.
The Toymaker Competition Winner
For those who are members of our Facebook page you may have seen our competition recently to win a copy of Tom Karen's latest book, "The Toymaker" (RRP £20) which is an autobiography. To be in with a chance of winning the book, entrants needed to answer the following question:
What colour was the Bond Bug?
Thank you to all those who entered, the answer was of course B - Orange. To make it as fair as we could all entries (all being correct) were placed in a name selector app that randomly selects one name - and we are delighted to say the winner was: Andy Jones.
Congratulations Andy, pictured here with his prize.
New Reliant Scimitar Book
Some people will be aware that Elvis Payne is currently writing a new Reliant book for Veloce Publishing entitled The Essential Buyers Guide - Reliant Scimitar GTE. The book covers all GTE's from the SE5 to the Middlebridge Scimitar and details things to look out for when buying a Scimitar GTE.
The book was originally due to be published in November 2020 although as with most things, Covid-19 halted it and the book was temporarily postponed. The good news is that the publishers are now up and running again, and if Elvis can get it completed by the end of October, the book is now due in February 2021.
For those curious about the Scimitar GTE on the front this was actually the very first Reliant Elvis can recall seeing in 1977. It belonged to one of his teachers Bob Cole and here we are all these years and Bob still owns the car driving it daily. What a great testament to the Scimitar GTE.

In addition whilst all RMC magazines are viewable by RMC members only, our first edition is available to all and this year alone has been downloaded 237 times.
