Nim's News is back!

After a brief hiatus, Nim's News is back to bring you updates from Self-Advocates of Indiana. Nim's News will now be monthly and will focus on sharing the great things that SAI and our local chapters are doing around Indiana.

First Chapter Leadership Training Day

Self-Advocates of Indiana held its first annual SAI Chapter Leadership Training Day on February 26. SAI officers led a training for leaders of our local self-advocacy groups. Topics discussed included self-advocacy, how to run your meetings, officer roles and responsibilities, chapter communication, and more.

SAI officers also helped lead a breakout session for chapter helpers. Chapter helpers are usually agency staff who help assist a self-advocacy group. This training focused on how helpers can empower self-advocates to lead.

2019 Valentine's Day at the Statehouse

Over 150 self-advocates and members of The Arc of Indiana and Self-Advocates of Indiana attended this year's Valentine's Day at the Statehouse. This annual event is an opportunity to thank our legislators for their work and remind them that people with disabilities are an important part of their constituency.

Thank you to everyone who came out to the statehouse. We had one of the largest groups we've ever had. Also, thank you to all of the elected officials that met with our group.

Employment First Town Hall Terre Haute

People with disabilities, their families, and community members are invited to come and share their ideas on how to improve employment for people with disabilities at the Employment First Town Hall in Terre Haute. This meeting will take place on March 20 from 5 P.M. to 7 P.M. at the Vigo County Public Library.

Participants will discuss how Indiana and the Terre Haute area can increase employment and change systems.

The goal of the town hall is to:
  • Develop a group of people in the Terre Haute area supporting Employment First;
  • Identify barriers to getting jobs and design a system that works for people;
  • Develop local initiatives to educate and dispel myths about community employment;and
  • Document success stories of people with disabilities working in Terre Haute and surrounding communities.
There will be additional town halls in Evansville and Muncie on April 24, and other dates and locations to be determined.
