AWA holds Voter Drive at the local library

By Leann Dusenberry
October 11, 2016 was the last day to register to vote in Indiana. Seven members of Awesome Westside Advocates, Indianapolis, In encouraged people to register or check the IndianaVoters.com website. They were stationed at the front door of the Brownsburg Library from Noon to 4 p.m. They handed out "Your Vote is Your Voice" booklets and little paper slips with the voter registration website. At least two people registered to vote that day while in the library because of the information. Others found out about early voting at the library.

Self-Advocates of Tomorrow holds mock election

Self-Advocates of Tomorrow (SAT), Columbus, In focused its September and October membership meetings on the upcoming election. In September SAT board members researched the positions of Hillary Clinton and Donald Trump and provided a program with information on their biographies as well as their stance, as it related to individuals with disabilities, on Education, Employment, Health Care and Disability Rights and Issues. Information on voting in Indiana - such as registration deadlines, voting rights and requirements- was also presented.

In October SAT hosted a meeting with State Representative candidates Bob Pitman and Milo Smith who shared information about their background. Questions from SAT members and discussion focused on Employment, Education, Housing and Residential Options and DSP pay. October was also SAT's Annual Meeting in which they held their own election and Jacob Taylor was elected the new President for the coming year. The meeting ended with a "Mock Election" in which Hillary Clinton was voted the member's preference for President and Bob Pittman for State Representative.

The Arc of Gibson County held a Voter Registration Drive and Candidate Meet & Greet where they registered 14 self-advocates that will vote for the first time this November.

Mayor of Lebanon Swears in Aktion Club Officers

On October 11, Lebanon Mayor Matt Gentry attended the Aktion Club of Greater Boone County's monthly meeting. During the meeting, the Mayor thanked each of the outgoing Aktion Club officers for their service and swore in each of the incoming officers into their new roles. Self-advocates, staff, community members, and the local sheriff attended the meeting.

Aktion Club members took time to thank the mayor for attending and for listening to the concerns of self-advocates. In September, Aktion Club officer, Kim Milas, visited the mayor's office to discuss some important safety concerns, specifically the speed of cars passing outside her agency. The mayors office acted quickly and had a radar speed limit signed placed outside The Arc of Boone County's building to help monitor speed and encourage drivers to slow down.

Thank you to Kim for being a great advocate and to Mayor Gentry to listening to the concerns of self-advocates.
