Insights from Rome
Michael C. McFarland, SJ

We have just completed our week-long Colloquium in Rome, bringing trustees and supporters to visit the Gregorian University and Biblical and Oriental Institutes, along with the Vatican, the Jesuit Curia and other key Jesuit sites. It was not just an informative and engaging experience, but also a deeply spiritual one, as the group reflected, shared and prayed together, forming strong bonds of friendship, trust and support. They got to meet His Holiness Pope Francis, the Jesuit General Fr. Arturo Sosa, Cardinal Parolin, the Vatican Secretary of State, Cardinal Ladaria, the Prefect of the Dicastery for the Doctrine of the Faith, Cardinal Roche, the Prefect of the Dicastery on Liturgy and the Sacraments and other key Jesuit and Vatican officials.

Just as impressive and memorable were the extraordinarily talented and devoted students we met, from every part of the world, all dedicated to serving the Church and their communities. It was inspiring to see students from every different background, diocesan seminarians and priests, men and women from a wide variety of religious orders, and lay people, from every race and culture, working together in harmony, caring for and supporting one another in a common quest for a deeper understanding of our faith and its manifestation in our world. Many, especially lay people and religious women, are there at great personal sacrifice, living in cramped quarters, commuting three or more hours a day to and from school and skimping on food. It brought home the need for even more scholarship help than we provide now.

Inauguration of the Academic Year 2022-2023

On the afternoon of Monday, 3 October, the Holy Mass for the Inauguration of the Academic Year 2022-2023, the 472nd since the foundation of the Roman College, was celebrated at the Church of St. Ignatius in Campo Marzio. On the closing of the St. Francis Borgia Jubilee Year (3 October 2021 - 3 October 2022), Rector Fr. Mark Lewis S.J. based his homily on the figure of the third Superior General of the Society of Jesus, who played such an important part in the history of the Roman College.

The liturgical animation was provided by the Pontifical Mexican College.

What Catholic colleges and universities can learn from Pope Francis

The Pope gave an address on September 29 at a conference on "Initiatives in Refugee and Migrant Education," held at the Pontifical Gregorian University.
Although the primary focus of the conference was on supporting and educating migrants and refugees, which itself is notable given how controversial immigration policy is in the United States, the pope's remarks are also instructive for those thinking about what the purpose and goals of education are in general and in Catholic higher education in particular. In Memoriam
Gregorian Alumnus Fr. John P. Meier, a theologian and biblical commentator whose multi-volume “A Marginal Jew” transformed the Catholic approach to critical historical research into the life of Jesus and religious faith, died Oct. 18 in South Bend, Indiana. He was 80 years old.

The Church begins November by celebrating the feast of All Saints and continues with the commemoration of All Souls. Here at the Gregorian University Foundation, we are always praying for all of you who have joined us in our mission of building up the Church through your generous support of our educational works in Rome. This month we will especially pray for those whom we have lost. On All Souls Day, we will offer Mass for all the deceased members of our community, including all of the benefactors, family and friends who have passed away. We will continue to remember them in our Masses and prayers throughout the month. If there is anyone specific you want us to remember, please click the button below to submit the name(s).

Praying with the Pope in October
Pope Francis' Universal prayer intention for October is:

For a Church open to everyone

We pray for the Church; ever faithful to, and courageous in preaching the Gospel, may the Church be a community of solidarity, fraternity and welcome, always living in an atmosphere of synodality.
