This newsletter updates subscribed readers on the activities financed by the Danube Water Program.
The Danube Water Program supports policy dialogue and capacity development to achieve Smart Policies, Strong Utilities, Sustainable Services in the water supply and wastewater sector in the Danube Region. The program is jointly run by the World Bank and IAWD, with funding from the Government of Austria.

Update on the Danube Water Program team

We welcome Raimund Mair as new Program Leader of the Danube Water Program. Patricia Lopez will move to Washington D.C., but remains part of the DWP team. Finally, DWP Program Analyst Elvira Broeks will leave the team in August to take a position in the World Bank Headquarter in Washington D.C. We wish her all the best for her new position.

State of the Sector 2018 Update

Impressions of the 2019 Danube Water Conference 

In its seventh year, the Danube Water Conference traditionally happening in May each year in Vienna, has again proved to be the gathering of the Danube region’s water family. This year’s conference on “Achieving resilience in water and wastewater utilities in the Danube region” brought together 200+ people coming from 25+ countries representing all stakeholders of the water sector to discuss the way forward towards smart policies, strong utilities and sustainable services.

Update on Utility Benchmarking Program (UBP)

The second Danube Hub benchmarking workshop was successfully organized in cooperation with the City of Subotica and PUC Subotica in Serbia on 27 February to 1 March 2019. 
The process of recruitment of utilities for participation in the new Utility Benchmarking cycle in all four Hubs (Danube Hub, Albania/Kosovo Hub, Bulgaria Hub and Ukraine Hub) is continuously open. For further information please contact Katerina Schilling or Philip Weller.

Update on Energy Efficiency (EE) Program 

On 26 March 2019, Aquasan Network in BiH delivered the final workshop for 9 representatives from 4 water utilities, thus completing the first training cycle under the D-LeaP EE Program.

Further progress on other D-LeaP Programs 

In April 2019, ADKOM has successfully launched the Water Safety Planning (WSP) program in North-Macedonia by organising the first workshop
The Asset Management program that has been already established by AQUASAN for BiH and UTVSI for Serbia, North Macedonia and Montenegro, has now been launched in Albania operated by SHUKALB and in Kosovo operated by SHUKOS .

Gender equality in Danube region's utilities

Beginning in 2017, the Danube Water Program and the World Bank Global Water Security and Sanitation Partnership collaborated with three pioneering utilities in the Danube region to take a closer look at gender equality in their workplace. A Knowledge Note as well as the Full Report are available and two webinars were/will be hosted on the subject (see event section). More Information

IAWD General Assembly convened in Vienna

The IAWD General Assembly convened in the frame of the 2019 Danube Water Conference on 22 May 2019 in Vienna.
In the course of the meeting the IAWD members approved the decisions of the IAWD Board to change the english name of IAWD to International Association of Water Service Companies in the Danube River Catchment Area to reflect the expanding scope of the association from water supply to wastewater.  

IAWD signed MoU with Global Water Partnership in CEE

On 15 February 2019, Global Water Partnership Central and Eastern Europe (GWP CEE) and the International Association of Water service companies in the Danube river catchment area (IAWD) signed a Memorandum of Understanding. The Memorandum of Understanding is an excellent opportunity to complement the expertise and partnerships that the two organizations have built in their networks. More Information

IAWD cooperates with DEX Summerschool

Together with DEX (Deutscher Expertenrat), which is a cooperation between well-known university professors as well as industry working in the water sector, IAWD was able to offer three free registrations in the upcoming 2019 DEX Summerschool to be held on June 30 – July 5, 2019 in Rottenbach/Austria. All teachers are internationally well recognised academics from Austria and Germany with long-term scientific and practical experience in the field of their lectures and beyond. More Information

Webinar on "Diversity in the Water Workforce: Ensuring Gender Equality and Inclusion"

This webinar is the follow-up of webinar organized by the World Bank focusing on the Danube region and will provide a broader perspective on diversity in the water workforce. In this webinar, water organizations from around the world will share why and how they are encouraging diversity within their workforce. Two utilities and one technology provider will share measures and instruments used to promote equal opportunities at all levels of responsibility and inclusive work culture. More information

IWA Water Loss 2019

The Southeast Europe Regional Conference Water Loss  2019 will be organised on 22-24 September 2019 in Bucharest, Romania and is intended to present and discuss the latest developments, strategies, techniques and applications of international best practices in Non-Revenue Water Management. More information

11th IWA Eastern European YWP Conference

The 11th IWA Eastern European YWP Conference will be organised on 1-5 October 2019 in Prague, Czech Republic and is supported by the  of IAWD member Energie AG Bohemia. IAWD with support of the Danube Water Program will organise in workshop on utility benchmarking in the frame of the conference. More information
