We’re approaching an exciting time in the Northern Health Science Alliance’s history. This autumn it will be five years since Professor Iain Jacobs, newly in position in Manchester, realised that the North needed a body to advocate for it and to help it work together to support a thriving UK life and health science ecosystem.

Personally I am incredibly proud of the opportunity I’ve been given to help the North in my position as CEO of the NHSA – and what we’ve achieved as a partnership with all of our membership organisations. Find out details of what we’ll be doing to celebrate below.

Following London Mayor Sadiq Khan's campaign 'London Is Open' I've written a piece on why 'The North Is Open', you can read it here. Interestingly the Lord Mayor of the City of London yesterday wrote a piece on the importance of the Northern Powerhouse - you can read his piece here. It is now more important than ever that we rally behind the Northern Powerhouse and I was delighted to hear that Liverpool secured the new Royal College of Physicians northern headquarters - all part of building a stronger powerhouse.

Also in this packed newsletter is our partnership with Alderley Park’s AMR Centre and the Wellcome Trust on the Carb-X initiative, new life science and Northern Powerhouse leads in Government and the awarding of ‘3* reference site’ status for our Northern AHSNs in Active and Healthy Ageing.

Chief Executive Officer, NHSA
MISSION UPDATE: BIRTHDAY CELEBRATIONS

We’re thrilled to announce that as part of our fifth birthday celebrations we have commissioned IPPR North to publish a report looking at the value of the North’s healthcare economy.

As well as a daytime launch event for the report we will be hosting an evening event at the Wellcome Collection with leading figures from government as well as colleagues from industry, journalists and our membership. This will be a celebration of the achievements of the NHSA and the North as a whole.

MISSION UPDATE: AMR CENTRE $350M PARTNERSHIP

The Northern Health Science Alliance (NHSA) is a strategic partner of the newly formed AMR Centre based at Alderley Park who, working with the Wellcome Trust, are partners in a US-led initiative Carb-X which will see the investment made to tackle the growing health crisis around antibiotic resistance.

In partnership with the NHSA, the  AMR Centre will be able to harness the expertise of scientists from across the North. Read our press release here and Yorkshire Evening Post coverage here
