Newsletter #4

17th March 2017

Talofa Parents/Whānau

What beautiful Autumn weather we are having!  One hopes the lovely weather stays around for the long weekend.

I would like to take this opportunity to remind all families that if your child is to be away from school for any reason, that you must ring the school office before 9am to let the school know that your child/children will be away from school.  As well as letting us know, we must also know the reason for their absence.  It is a requirement of the Ministry of Education that all absences are explained eg. a doctor's appointment, sickness etc.  If your child is to be away from school for reasons other than sickness, then permission does need to be obtained from the principal; ie holidays overseas etc.  Please remember to call and either leave a message or talk to Michelle, thank you.

Just a reminder about our school website, is up to date with up coming events that are happening at school.  It also has the current newsletter and past editions, sports draws, PTA minutes, school council meeting minutes etc.  If you are having trouble getting onto the website, click on the link above.  PLEASE NOTE - IF YOU HAVE EVER BEEN TO OUR OLD WEBSITE, THEN YOU NEED TO CLEAR YOUR BROWSER HISTORY AND TYPE IN THE NEW ADDRESS.  This will mean it doesn't remember the old site you have previously visited.

Also, if you wish to take advantage of the 10% discount on your School Donation fee, these would need to be paid in full by 31st March 2017.

Enjoy the weekend and remember - Monday is a holiday!

Nga mihi,

Happenings in Room 4

We are pleased to extend a warm welcome to AJ, Esther, Blake, Ika, Lana, Matson and Ayaz and their whānau who have all joined us in Room 4 this term.

In Room 4 we have been busy working on some zoo themed maths problems as part of our Zoo theme last week.

The problem was : Susie the zookeeper counted 12 legs as they walked into the enclosure-  what animals might she have seen? How many animals could she have seen?

We researched some animals, acted out the problem, made puppets and worked in groups to present our ideas.  Here are some of our solutions:

We have also been thoroughly enjoying joining with Room 3 to take part in our Discovery Time program where we get to explore, create, problem solve, work together and develop our perseverance, communication and motor skills.

Room 8

In Room 8 this week we have been busy preparing for the upcoming year 6 camp.  We are heading off to Camp Iona in Herbert for 4 days next week.  Today we were up-skilling our First Aid knowledge, thanks to Neville from NZ Red Cross.
Yesterday we erected the brand new tents that have recently been purchased.  It was tricky in the beginning but once groups worked together and checked out the 'model' tent a tent village popped up super fast!  The plan is to sleep out in the tents - weather permitting!

Getting into the stable side position (a.k.a as the recovery position).
We have also been looking at the skeletal system.....a hugely important structure!
Checking out some bones using our most fabulous powers of observation!
In maths we have been looking at stem and leaf graphs and how to interpret the information shown in graphs ie. What is the data telling us?  What conclusions can we make from our data inferences?

Many Thanks!

A HUGE thank you to the PTA who recently purchased 8 tents for school use. The tents had their first outing yesterday....year 5-6s getting to grips with tent pitching in preparation for Camp Iona next week.  This was a great exercise in team work, co-operation, leadership and problem solving.
They do look pretty cool!!
