Message from Marqise Allen, WSDOT

Touching base to remind you that the sandblasting and painting of the Aurora Bridge is scheduled to begin the week of June 4. As I mentioned in the last email, Liberty Maintenance had to adjust its strategy due to the nesting red tail hawks. Liberty has tentatively scheduled to begin sandblasting and painting on Thursday, June 7. The plan is to start on the south side of the bridge and paint from Sixth Avenue to Dexter Avenue. We’re still waiting for a response from US Fish and Wildlife for what to do beyond that point. How the work continues will be based off their recommendation so we don’t disturb the hawks.
  • Noise monitoring tests - Before this work gets underway, WSDOT and Liberty will test the noise shields that will be set up around the staging area. Testing is scheduled for Wednesday, June 6 near the Carlton House in south Queen Anne. This will allow them to make any needed adjustments to the shields to ensure the equipment at the staging area will stay at or below 73 decibels 50 feet away. Because this is a test, there may be some occasional spikes beyond that threshold that register on the noise monitoring webpage.
  • Nighttime work - On top of the sandblasting and painting work during the day, crews will continue to finish setting up platforms underneath the bridge up to Westlake Avenue. This work is scheduled from 9 p.m. to 5 a.m. Monday through Thursday.
  • Air quality monitoring - Environmental Health and Safety is finishing up the required air quality testing this week to establish a baseline before Liberty starts painting. We’ll send along the report and a summary of the findings once they’re completed.
I believe that covers all of the updates. Don’t hesitate to mail  to reach out if you have any questions or need additional information.  Best, Marqise Allen - 206-440-469
