A Relationship for Life

Recently, I had the chance to visit a former client - someone with whom I had worked for over a year before he was resentenced to life without parole. He is now safe from being executed.

I hadn’t seen him for some time. When I got to the visiting area, he gave me a big hug. He mentioned that when other inmates heard his investigator was coming to visit they had started asking him what action he still had in the courts. "Nothing," he told them. "She and the lawyers who worked on my case are my friends."

And that's the truth. It can be easy to see mitigation work as just collecting records and interviewing people, but it is so much more. I spent countless hours with this client, learning about his life and about what makes him who he is. In that time, a connection is formed that doesn't just go away when a legal process ends.

Every day our team fights to make sure our clients' lives are valued. It is something that we feel deeply and personally. It is the very essence of our work toward a less retributive criminal justice system.

Victoria and Jeannie!

This week, ARC, Inc. welcomed our first interns from Amicus. Amicus is a UK-based organization dedicated to helping provide assistance for those facing the death penalty in the United States.

During their month with us, Victoria (left) and Jeannie (right) will provide critical support to our team of life history investigators, while also assisting with research and drafting articles for publication.

They are the first of many Amicus interns who will join us this year. We are grateful for their help in ensuring that our clients receive the best defense possible.
