Summary Thought
Wherever God gives true grace, he will give more; for to him that has, and uses what he has aright, more shall be given. He will especially give more grace to the humble, because they see their need of it, will pray for it and be thankful for it; and such shall have it.
Matthew Henry

Scripture Text for Sunday Morning

James 4:1–10 (ESV)

What causes quarrels and what causes fights among you? Is it not this, that your passions are at war within you?  You desire and do not have, so you murder. You covet and cannot obtain, so you fight and quarrel. You do not have, because you do not ask.  You ask and do not receive, because you ask wrongly, to spend it on your passions.  You adulterous people! Do you not know that friendship with the world is enmity with God? Therefore whoever wishes to be a friend of the world makes himself an enemy of God.  Or do you suppose it is to no purpose that the Scripture says, “He yearns jealously over the spirit that he has made to dwell in us”?  But he gives more grace. Therefore it says, “God opposes the proud but gives grace to the humble.”  Submit yourselves therefore to God. Resist the devil, and he will flee from you.  Draw near to God, and he will draw near to you. Cleanse your hands, you sinners, and purify your hearts, you double-minded.  Be wretched and mourn and weep. Let your laughter be turned to mourning and your joy to gloom.  Humble yourselves before the Lord, and he will exalt you.

Discussion Questions
Have you ever been a part of quarreling and fighting in a family? In a Church?  What does James say is the cause of this division?

What does James mean by “friendship with the world?”

Why does James refer to his audience as “adulterous people?”

What two things does James tell us about God that bring us hope?

How are we to humble ourselves before the Lord?

Adult choir practice… The choir will practice on the following Wednesday evenings at 7:45 pm, October 16th & 23rd, and will sing during the October 27th morning worship service. Come join us, as we prepare to sing to the glory & praise of God and enjoy each other’s fellowship in Christ.

New Mission updates… from Brandon Haan, Ross & Ellen Errington, and Paul & Liz Meiners are on the Missions bulletin board in the hallway by the Fellowship Hall entrance.

Operation Christmas Child: Regarding items that have been dropped off—washcloths and soap are in good supply, also lots of socks in various sizes. Looks like we could use more notebooks/pads of paper (they need to be flexible or sized to fit into the boxes.) Please drop off any school supplies ahead of the party date—it helps me out with organizing! Some great gifts have been dropped off and it will be exciting to pack the boxes on Sunday, November 3rd, at 2:00 pm. Any items/gifts for this project may be dropped off at the S.S. bulletin board area or you can bring them to the party. Please continue to pray for the children who will receive these gifts.
