Bike Month Local Events

Grab your bike and help us celebrate Newark’s growing bicycle and pedestrian community and lifestyle by participating in bike events throughout the month of May—National Bike Month. Kick off the month with the Mayor’s Fun Ride. Other events include Bike to Work Day, Bike to School Day, and Bike Basics in a Minute! Thanks to the City of Newark, the University of Delaware, and participating businesses for making this happen!

Second Annual Mayor’s Fun Ride
April 30, 10:00 a.m. - 12:30 p.m.

Join us for the 2nd Annual Mayor’s Fun Ride! Following the success of the inaugural event last year, the City of Newark is expanding the Fun Ride to include two courses. Participants can choose the 2.5-mile “Family Fun Ride” or a scenic 8.5-mile “Newark Loop Fun Ride.” The Mayor's Fun Ride is a non-timed, non-race event that showcases the amazing trail system we have in Newark while encouraging physical activity and proper bike safety.

The event will be held on Saturday, April 30, at the Newark Shopping Center at 230 East Main Street. In addition to the two rides, the event will feature educational and safety information, raffles, and door prizes, and children’s activities, including a helmet decorating table and a bicycle skills course. We'll even have a family-friendly live band, FishCastle, from 10:00 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. so that you can boogie before and after your ride!

Registration and check-in for cyclists begins at 10:00 a.m. and ends at 10:45 a.m. The 2.5-mile ride will leave the shopping center on the Pomeroy Trail at 10:30 a.m. The 8.5-mile ride will depart at 11 a.m. The fee for the event is $5 for adults, while children (17 & under) are free. Funds will benefit bicycling programs in Newark.

Organizers and sponsors of this event include the Atlantic Realty Companies (Newark Shopping Center), City of Newark Department of Parks and Recreation, the Newark Bicycle Committee, and the Newark Bike Project. For more information contact the city's Parks and Recreation Office at 302-266-7000 or visit www.cityofnewarkde.us/play.

Bike to School Day
May 10

John R. Downes Elementary School will be celebrating Bike to School Day on Tuesday, May 10. Newark Mayor Polly Sierer will be on hand to read the National Bike to School Day Proclamation and greet students who bike or walk to school with small tokens.

Bike Basics in a Minute!
May 12, 11:00 a.m. - 3:00 p.m.
Rain Date: May 18

Do you know Newark’s rules of the road? How about biking etiquette? Has anyone ever shown you basic bike moves that you can use every day? Stop by the tent on May 12 at the UD Memorial Hall (south plaza) between 11:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. for a speedy self-guided, expert-assisted tour of essential bicycle information that you can apply every time you ride! Bring your bike and get a quick tune-up and take home some free bike lights and a helmet if you need them. Prizes/food for those who complete all activities. Casual ride around town at 3:00 p.m., ending at The UD Speakeasy. This bike education event is being especially marketed to UD international and ELI students, but all members of the UD and Newark communities are welcomed!

Bike to Work Day
May 20, 7:30 - 9:00 a.m.

Don’t miss the Newark Bike to Work Day Celebration at Mentors’ Circle on the University of Delaware campus (just off South College Avenue at Kent Way) between 7:30 and 9:00 a.m. on Friday, May 20. We’ll have coffee and breakfast treats on hand, and will present a short program to honor YOU and special people in our community who work hard to make riding safer for all.

Make your morning commute even more fun by meeting up with other riders at six designated locations around town to ride to Mentors’ Circle en masse! Experience for yourself this invigorating and upbeat way to launch your workday! See our website (www.wilmapco.org/bikenewark) for bike-train departure locations for this event.

Please give us a shout if you would like help in planning your commute! Contact Mark Deshon for more information.

Cleveland Avenue Task Force

For several years, Cleveland Avenue has been named one of the state's most dangerous roads, due to an alarming number of accidents that involve cars, bicycles, and pedestrians. The City of Newark has created a Cleveland Avenue Task Force that is charged with exploring potential improvements to Cleveland Avenue that would make it safer for all users of this public roadway. Meetings are open to the public. Next meeting: April 28, 7 p.m., at Newark City Council Chambers.  For more information, please contact Susan Grasso.

City of Newark Upcoming Infrastructure Improvements

The City of Newark has been busy taking advantage of planned paving projects and grant opportunities to enhance the safety of our roads for bicyclists and pedestrians. Keep your eye out for the following bicycle-friendly projects coming your way:
  • Delaware Avenue two-way protected bike lane (“cycle track”)
  • North College bike lane widening
  • Apple Road bike lanes (hopefully buffered)
  • Safe Routes to School upgrades to Casho Mill Road
  • Main Street crosswalk upgrades and parklets (addition of bike racks, benches, parklets)
  • Elkton Road bike lanes and separated multi-use path from Casho Mill Road to Maryland state line
For further information or to share comments about these projects, please contact contact Mark Deshon.
