Principal's Update

Dear Thompson Families,
We are off to a great start to the school year!  The beginning of the year is full of such excitement and promise of all the adventures that lie ahead.  Our first couple of weeks are under our belt, and the students seem to be adjusting well.
This year we welcome a few new staff members to our amazing staff:
  • Mr. Fiorentini, Music Teacher - you may have seen him in the lobby in the mornings or afternoons, serenading us with his ukelele skills!  He joins us after teaching Music in Billerica for the past few years.  He is a gifted musician and we are fortunate to have snagged him this summer!
  • Ms. Shmerling, Kindergarten Teacher - after teaching English abroad in Chile, she returned to Georgia where she worked in Early Childhood.  Ms Shmerling then moved to Massachusetts, where she was a Teaching Fellow, in a Kindergarten program in Dorchester.  She was a great fit from the start with our amazing K team!
  • Mr. Ryan Wholey, PE Teacher - not a stranger to Thompson at all, but he is in a new role!  We welcome Mr. Wholey, formerly known as Mr. Ryan, to the PE Team with Mrs. Fanciullo. It's great to have a new staff member who is already familiar with our community!
We have also been very fortunate to hire new teaching assistants to join our talented group:
  • Mr. Ryan Pensavalle
  • Mr. Lamar Walker
  • Ms. Kelly Downing
  • Ms. Julia Vogt
  • Ms. Shaena Grossman
  • Ms. Erin Crowley
In addition, we have a new Special Education Team Chair, Meredith Whalen.  You will see her at Initial Evaluation Meetings, Case Consultations, etc. She will spend her time between Thompson and Dallin.
A few housekeeping notes:
  • The school day begins at 8:10.  If students enter the building after 8:15, they are considered tardy. If after 8:15,  students should enter through the main office doors, stop and give Ms. Vicki their name, and then take their pineapple pass.
  • If a student needs to be dismissed, please check in at the office and we will call them down.
  • All Visitors must sign in at the Main Office and take a Visitor's Pass.
  • We ask that parents give their last hugs and kisses before the students enter the building.  If you do walk your student in to the main office, please do not escort them to  the classroom.
Looking forward to a great year!  Please don't hesitate to reach out if you have any questions.
See you soon,

PTO Spotlight

Dear Thompson Families,
Thank you to all of the new and familiar faces who attended the first PTO meeting of the year last Wednesday where we were happy to introduce the PTO board members. Many are continuing for another year, and some are joining the board for the first time:
Co-Presidents: Ashley Lorenz & Christy Murphy-Macinta
Vice-President: Melissa Crowley
Co-Treasurers: Stacey Ihnat & Sabrina Kias
Direct Donations: Yael Beals and Joselyn Dennis
Arlington Community Card Co-Chairs: Ashley Lorenz & Gaggi DeStefanis
Enrichment Co-Chairs: Tonja Bishop & Sophie Delano
Communications Co-Chairs: Danielle Gottesman & Lani Obermayer
Spirit & Appreciation Co-Chairs: Melissa Crowley & Nora Dybdal
Room Parent Chair: Shannon Hancock
Community Outreach Chair: Melissa Crowley
Here are some fun facts about the board: did you know that between us, we speak 8 different languages?  In the world outside of Thompson, our past and present professions include: a historian, editor, pediatric dermatologist, psychologist, fitness trainer, product manager, economist, pediatric physical therapist, illustration agent, nutritionist, elder service manager, film maker, and sustainable investing professional.
We would also like to take this opportunity to thank our outgoing board members, Nandana Mewada and Carolyn Schneyer (now graduated to Gibbs), for their leadership. Thank you for your tireless commitment to the Thompson students and community!
Turning to fundraising, the 2019-2020 Arlington Community Card (ACC) launched with over 1,040 cards sold, raising over $10,000 in one weekend!  Hats (and wigs) off to ACC co-chairs Ashley Lorenz, Gaggi DeStefanis, Co-Chair in-training Cici Klein, the ACC Committee and all the parent and student volunteers who came down to sell!  We anticipate selling 800 more cards betwen now and November 30th. See how you can help us reach that goal.
Next up is our largest fundraiser for the year, the Direct Donation Drive (DDD). This one-time request for a contribution from families and friends is held during the month of October and is the only time we will ask directly for money. Our participation goal for the year is 300 families and no amount of contribution is too small. Please look out for the flyer and form to come home soon  your child’s backpack.
