Williams Syndrome - Befriending & Providing Support

You may be forgiven for thinking that Befriending is all about making friends, taking people out for coffee and cake, attending social gatherings and generally chatting at home. Befriending goes far beyond this, it is about understanding and supporting appropriately.

Inspire has many clients who all have different conditions and support needs; and it is important to us that we understand the individual, their indications and respond accordingly.

One of our clients lives with a condition called Williams Syndrome which affects around one in 18,000 people in the UK. It can cause a wide range of mental health issues which can include anxiety and depression. It can lead to a high level of verbal ability which can represent itself by excessive talking and uninhibited behaviour. Some suffer from Hyperacusis (which is where the individual hears certain sounds much louder than normal hearing people) and therefore, we need to be aware of the surroundings when we are taking our client out and about.
Sadly, Williams Syndrome is a little know condition and there is no known cure, single treatment or therapy. However, raising awareness is important and the Williams Syndrome Foundation (WSF) which is a registered charity offers help and support for individuals and families. If you, or someone you know or cares for, lives with a condition that affects their ability to interact in social settings or results in them being socially isolated, please get in touch as we may be able to help. We are responsive and understanding of all conditions that affect the normal daily lives of individuals - that is what sets us apart!
