Infrastructure needs main topic at discussion

MARSHALL - Infrastructure is a topic that gets discussed a lot by city and county officials in the Marshall area - especially the question of how to pay for needed updates to roads, bridges, sewers and more. This week, area leaders got a chance to talk about what could be done at the federal level to help maintain and improve Minnesota infrastructure. … Several participants in the discussion said expanding regional travel infrastructure was important. "Marshall is becoming more and more a regional hub," said Marshall Area Chamber of Commerce Director Brad Gruhot. Roads and bridges needed to be strong enough to accommodate truck and agricultural traffic. Regional corridors, like Minnesota Highway 23, also needed to be expanded, he said.

$35K for community marketing initiatives won’t be spent on any consulting firms

One thing City Administrator Shannon Stassen assured members of the Crookston City Council Ways & Means Committee before they approved a $35,000 investment in community marketing strategies and initiatives is that the money simply won’t be handed over to some type of consulting firm to, as Stassen put it, “Tell us a lot of things we already know.” The larger goal is to leverage the $35,000 with other organizations, such as the Chamber & Visitors’ Bureau, Riverland Tourism Association, and Explore Minnesota to turn the $35,000 into more dollars. In addition, Stassen said, previous sit-downs he and Chamber Executive Director Amanda Lien had with numerous local employers who are in constant need of new employees and would benefit from enhanced local marketing efforts were especially fruitful, and he anticipates now that some actual dollars have been improved for the effort, that some of those employers will pony up some money, too, if the potential result benefits their operations.

Minnesota can expect a growing economy

KIMT News 3 – The Minnesota Department of Employment and Economic Development, DEED, says more than 80 percent of Minnesota business services firms expect sales and profits to climb or remain the same in the next year. DEED conducted this survey in May and June collecting responses from 242 firms in the state. Randy Kehr from the Albert Lea-Freeborn County Chamber of commerce says he isn’t surprised by this. “I see the optimism in Minnesota and it is clear that Minnesota generally is an optimistic state,” said Kehr.
