December 2017
From your ADEPT President
It was great to see so many of you at the ADEPT Annual Conference in Manchester. I certainly enjoyed it and I’m not alone in that – of those who responded to the Slido question on the day, everyone without exception found the conference ‘very’ or ‘mostly useful’. I would urge you to respond if you have not done so already – just click here to go to the survey page. Your feedback is invaluable in helping to inform next year’s event. All of the conference presentations are now on the ADEPT website (here), plus the papers from the General Meeting (here). My thanks once again to our conference sponsors Ringway, Atkins, WSP and Volker Highways, plus our media partners Highways magazine and Transport Network.
November was a busy month. We launched our report Digital Innovation: The route to the highways systems of the future (here) at the House of Commons a month ago, and the sister report Planning SMART Places: unlocking growth and place-making through innovation (here) at the Conference. We are now discussing how we take the SMART Places research programme into the next phase. We hosted a successful seminar on highways maintenance at Highways UK where it was standing room only, and a drinks reception later the same day. I also met with the Planning Inspectorate and attended the ADEPT Midlands Board.
I also want to highlight that we published the ADEPT Strategic Plan, Shaping places for thriving communities, at the Conference. This is a critical document for the Association – it sets out ADEPT’s vision to 2035 and beyond, and how we plan to shape the places in which we live and work, building successful communities that are fit for the future and enabling good growth. It’s the framework that will sit behind the work of the Subject and Sub-National Boards. Please do take some time to read the Plan (here).
As always, I am happy to respond to any queries or comments.
All that remains is to wish you a Merry Christmas and Happy New Year!

Simon Neilson
ADEPT President

ADEPT continues to lead the debate on key issues with the launch of two influential new reports.
Digital Innovation: The route to the highways systems of the future was launched on 30 October.
Aimed at the Government and the many public, private and community players in transport and mobility, the report provides an analysis and practical suggestions for improving digital infrastructure and services across the highways network. It was produced with support from ADEPT’s project partners EY, Ringway and O2 and can be found here.

Planning SMART Places: unlocking growth and place-making through innovation was launched at the ADEPT Annual Conference on 23 November.
This report is part of an ongoing research programme by ADEPT and its partners Kier and Atkins into the opportunities offered by SMART (Self-Monitoring Analysis and Reporting Technology) Places and digital innovation in place-based services. This document relates specifically to digital innovation in planning SMART places and can be accessed here.
ADEPT Annual Conference success...
Over 150 delegates filled the conference suite at Manchester's Radisson Blu hotel for the ADEPT conference in November. It was busy, stimulating, relevant and fun. Feedback was overwhelmingly positive and will help us ensure that next year's event is even better!
All the speaker presentations from the conference can be found here, along with the minutes of the ADEPT General Meeting which took place on the Saturday evening.

Building with Nature
A new benchmark for the design and maintenance of green infrastructure in housing and commercial development was launched on 9 November.
Building with Nature has been developed by Gloucestershire Wildlife Trust in partnership with the University of the West of England, Bristol. It offers an assessment and certification service based on five core standards plus further standards under the themes of wellbeing, water and wildlife.
Following successful testing in Gloucestershire, projects are now being sought across the country. Further information can be found on the Building with Nature website.
Future Highways Research Club
On 5 October, the Future Highways Research Club (FHRC) was relaunched at Cranfield University. A research programme for 2017/18 was agreed and a summary of this can be viewed here.
FHRC membership comprises thought leaders from across the highways sector. The FHRC is coordinating its programme with ADEPT to ensure that the maximum benefit is achieved for the sector.
More information and FHRC membership applications are available from Simon Wilson
and there is an informative article about the FHRC in the November edition of Highways magazine (here).
UK Roads Liaison Group survey
Please take the opportunity to complete the UKRLG's survey on its guidance document ‘Well-Managed Highway Infrastructure: A Code of Practice’ which was published in October 2016. Local highway authorities have two years from the date of publication to implement the new guidance before the previous Codes are withdrawn.
The survey can be found here and should take only ten minutes to complete. Deadline for responses: 10 December 2017.
