A Confluence of Stewards

This year’s class of Stewards celebrated their graduation at Confluence, an annual gathering of certified stewards, partners, and program supporters. Capstone projects were on display as attendees noshed on appetizers, sampled Bang Brewing beverages, and celebrated the collective impact of volunteering over the last year. This year, awards were given to the Stewards who submitted the most volunteer hours, with the top awardee clocking in at a whopping 101 hours. Now, more than 350 certified stewards are leaders for water health in their communities!

Water Steward Linnea Goderstad and a project partner transformed a quarter-acre eyesore into a lush and beautiful community amenity that provides a haven for pollinators and a great way for residents to connect and volunteer.

Freshwater says farewell to Deirdre Coleman, as she receives Excellence Award from MAVA

This November, Deirdre received the well-deserved Award for Excellence in Volunteer Program Development from the Minnesota Association of Volunteer Administration. This award recognizes an individual who has made a superior contribution to furthering the culture and climate for professional volunteerism in Minnesota by developing an outstanding volunteer program and incorporating the essential elements of leading volunteers. Read more about the groundbreaking work Deirdre has done to earn this award.

As Deirdre received this award she was transitioning to a new role outside of Freshwater. We are sad to see her go, but her work and legacy of serving the water and people of this state with passion will continue. We wish her all the best – thank you Deirdre!

Ripple Effect: Freshwater’s Mission in Action

As a student at St. John’s University, Rob McManus has designed a project that puts him solidly in the professional research world. Interning with Dr. Carrie Jennings at Freshwater, he is documenting the history of some contaminants of emerging concern in the Twin Cities urban watershed, specifically commonly-used compounds that act as endocrine disrupting chemicals.

Snow- and ice-free Road Salt Symposium

New time of year, same great low-sodium flavor.
Thanks to all who attended the fall Road Salt Symposium, and for your feedback in determining the best time of year for this annual event. We were very excited to have one of MnDOT's icebreaker trucks as a special guest.
This fall's symposium also brought the most current research; provided local, regional, and national perspectives on winter maintenance; and featured Environmental Leadership Awards for those doing exceptional work to reduce salt use and advance the field of winter maintenance.
Congratulations to our awardees!

Darby Nelson book release party

On October 17 Darby and Geri Nelson celebrated the release of Darby’s newest book, For Love of a River: The Minnesota. The book chronicles Darby’s deep love for the Minnesota River Valley and a journey in which Darby and Geri paddled the Minnesota River from its source to its confluence with the Mississippi River.
Freshwater is grateful to Darby -- a long-time board member -- and Geri for a lifetime of devotion to the waters of Minnesota.

Marbrook Foundation awards Freshwater $25,000 grant

In December, the Marbrook Foundation announced an award of $25,000 to Freshwater to hold water sustainability dialogues with underserved communities and address disparities in health outcomes and environmental impacts. The Marbrook Foundation was founded in 1948 out of the philanthropic values of Edward and Markell Brooks. Edward was involved for his entire life in his family’s Brooks-Scanlon Lumber Company, which first operated in Scanlon, Minnesota and then beyond. Today, the Foundation awards grants in the areas of immigrants and refugees, the arts, and the environment.
Thank you, Marbrook Foundation!
