Merry Christmas & Happy New Year from the Ashy Redbacks

From the committee and the club, we want to wish all Redbackers and their families a very Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year. We hope you have a wonderful holiday wherever you may be, celebrating with family and friends.

Before launching into an update on all things happening at the club, at this time of year when we look out for others, I wanted to share with you the plight of one of our much loved families, the Gillieron's. Sally & Jemma have played in our U/15 Girls Red side for the past two years and their mum Sue has been the goal umpire at every game since the girls started. Sadly, Sue’s husband Bob, was diagnosed with early on-set dementia two years ago and his prognosis is terminal.

Sue is desperately trying to raise funds to help her family go on a holiday whilst they can all still enjoy the good times before they are unable to do so. Please have a look at the following page Sue has set up which tells you more about the impacts that terminal illness forces upon a family:

Given Christmas is the season of giving, it would be fantastic to see the Ashy community wrap our arms around Sue, the girls and the family by supporting where you can and by keeping them in your thoughts as they battle this hideous disease.  As a strong junior football community, it is at times like these, that we need to come together and support one of our own.  #AshySpirit

Coaching update

“A coach will impact more young people in a year than the average person does in a lifetime”
On behalf of the Club, we extend a huge thank you to all of the coaches that have put up their hand to coach in season 2017.

For many players (and parents), we know that finding out who your footy coach is as exciting as which home room teacher you’re allocated at the end of a school year! So rather than keep it under wraps until the eleventh hour, we’re happy to share with you the names of coaches that have expressed an interest in coaching for various age groups (note: this list is subject to change based upon registrations).

You will note on our website that we have a couple of coaching vacancies left so let us know at if you would like to take on this important role.
Footy Op's structure in 2017

In our November newsletter we mentioned that we will be bolstering up the support for our coaches and support teams in 2017. So it gives me great pleasure to announce:

Footy operations

Our footy operations sub-committee for 2017 will comprise of Ashley Fernee, Brett Gorman, Kim Ledder, Brendan Foley, Brenton Sellers and myself. We will be looking to add to this sub-committee with a representative from each year group who will help act as that respective year level co-ordinator. More on this will follow in Jan / Feb as we line up for the season.

Coaching coordinators

To support our coaches, we are excited to announce that a sub-committee of coaching coordinators has been established. The team includes Nick Bowden, Dave Francis and Greg Lasscock.
Nick, Dave and Greg will work together on developing programs that will help ‘Coach our Coaches’ and be a contact point to assist coaches with player, team and coach development throughout the season.

We are extremely fortunate that we belong to a Club that has enormous talent within in it and we thank Nick, Dave and Greg for sharing their expertise with us.
Girls footy

Thanks to Kim for coordinating three ‘Come and Try” sessions for girls in recent weeks, and a special shout out to James, Connor and Steph for all helping out.

There was a strong turnout overall which reinforces how exciting footy is for girls that want to get involved. Next season, we are aiming for 5 girls teams across the age groups of U11, U13, U15, U16 and Youth Girls.

There will still be plenty of opportunity to join us for a kick and a run during preseason training sessions in the new year so if you have friends or siblings who might want to be a part of Ashy in 2017 please tell them to reach out.

For further information, please contact our girls co-ordinator Kim Ledder

Preseason – Only 5 weeks away!

We expect to be starting preseason in the 2nd week of February 2017 at Dorothy Laver Reserve, subject to council approvals to use the grounds. Please stay tuned and watch the website and our social channels for further information.

Preseason is not compulsory but highly recommended to all registered players to assist their skills development and more importantly to blow the cobwebs out whilst having a bit of fun. Preseason will be run differently this year but more on that in Jan.
Club vacancies – How can you get involved?
We are still interested in hearing from members that are interested in making a contribution to the club across the following areas:
•    Social
•    Sponsorship
•    Ashy Ball
•    Roving Reporters (parents or players)
•    Year Level Coordinators

More details of these roles can be found on our website at

Let us know if you are available to help out, we’d be very appreciative.
Finally, thank you for all the feedback we have been getting, it is great to know that there are so many people out there in our club who are supportive and care about the direction that we are going in for 2017.

As mentioned previously, I always welcome your thoughts and suggestions so please don’t hesitate to reach out to me at or on 0405 421 323.
Once again, on behalf of myself and the entire committee, we wish you and your families a Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year.

Enjoy the relaxing summer break, remember to SLIP on some runners, SLOP on some sunscreen and SLAP on a training singlet when you’re kicking the footy these holidays.

We look forward to speaking with you next in Jan 2017.

Yours in footy

Steve Carlisle
