Hi Supporters!

While it has been a few months since we distributed our last newsletter we are pleased to report that we have been very busy as we continue our meningitis and meningococcal awareness raising activities and vaccine lobbying for our community.

As you would be aware we are celebrating our 25th Anniversary and have had a number of events including a Government House reception in May. Further to this event we have completed a new 3 Year Strategic Plan and launched our campaign for the vaccination of 15-19 year olds against the ACWY meningococcal strains. We are working with WA Health over the next six months on this important project. Our work has also included discussions with the Pharmacy Guild of WA and the State Government to make this vaccine more accessible across our vast state.

Our Board has also welcomed Sarah Johnston, Vicki Hobbs and Dr Catherine Gangell to our ranks and we look forward to their ongoing contributions as we tackle a wide range of matters in our new strategic plan.

Finally we are all pleased to welcome our Founding Supporters Group members and extend our sincere thanks for the financial and networking support members have provided. Your support has enabled us to add to our efforts with tackling meningitis and meningococcal head on and for us to maintain our state wide work for all West Australians.

So as you can and will see we have a lot on the go even after 25 years of work. These diseases don't stand still and every second counts when fighting them.

We value your support highly and we hope you enjoy the journey with us as we make WA a safer place to live !

25th Anniversary afternoon tea at Government House

On May 24th, the Centre was invited by her Excellency the Governor Kerrie Sanderson AC to take part in an afternoon tea to celebrate the Centre's silver Jubilee. We were joined by our Patron Professor Fiona Stanley AC, medical researchers, doctors, business people, supporters and family members. It was a wonderful occasion where the Governor met Pneumococcal Meningitis survivor Ashleigh Langoulant and was given a copy of the Centre's book "Meningitis A Tragedy by Instalments."

VIDEO- for the ACWY meningococcal campaign for 15-19 year olds in WA!

From now until the end of the year, 18 and 19 year olds will be given the ACWY vaccine for free through local health clinics in Western Australia. The vaccine is to protect these young adults from 4 strains of meningococcal A,C,W-135 and Y. The vaccination program also involves those teenagers aged between 15 and 17 years and they will be able to get their vaccination through school.This demographic is receiving the vaccine because they are considered the most socially active. They engage in sharing of drinks, cigarettes, deep kissing and partying in large groups. Meningococcal can kill within 24 hours, know the signs and symptoms

25th Anniversary launch of new videos.

In March, the Centre had a 25th anniversary party at the Harry Perkins Institute of Medical Research in Nedlands to unveil five new videos to showcase the work we have done over the past quarter century and to share this with our supporters. It was a wonderful evening catching up with friends and welcoming new sponsors to the Centre.

The Centre applied and was successful in a Lotterywest grant which will enable us to purchase new computer equipment and software, and develop more promotional material for our supporters. Thank you Lotterywest!

Meningitis Centre Australia will be at the Pregnancy Babies and C hildren's Expo in Perth at the Claremont Showgrounds August 11-13, Melbourne 6-8 October and Sydney 11-12 November (TBA). If you are heading down there drop in and say "Hi!" We will also be at the National Self Help and Support Groups Awareness Day on September 22 at the Perth Cultural Centre.
