By way of introduction, Metis was the Greek goddess of wisdom. We have named our newsletter after her to set the bar high, as we aspire to always bring you new knowledge and wisdom that will change the way you think about aging, life sciences and the prediction of life events.

LSI has been named the 2016 Coastal Entrepreneur Award winner in the Emerging Company Category

The awards are a joint effort of UNCW’s Center for Innovation and Entrepreneurship and the Greater Wilmington Business Journal to shine a spotlight on entrepreneurs in the region.

LSI Co-founder Dr. S. Jay Olshansky's new book, Aging: The Longevity Dividend, is now available on

Jay’s book sheds new light on the biological basis of aging, examines strategies that may extend health span, and discusses the societal implications of delayed aging.

It will serve as a vital reference for all involved in the fields of geroscience and geriatric medicine, as well as anyone wishing to understand physiological processes that generate health and disease, regardless of chronological age.

Our breakthrough insurance underwriting platform is now capable of operating in more than 40 countries.
We will continue to add more countries to the platform throughout 2016 and beyond.

New healthy lifespan module will help industries reduce risk

CHRONOS' lifespan score provides a relative measure of risk and can be used as a segmentation variable for underwriting, as well as to help assign customers to specific risk profiles.

Health care industries and health insurers can use the healthspan scores generated by CHRONOS to assess risk and determine pricing on both an individual and group basis.

New BMI module verifies self-reported health data and helps indentify individual risk factors

A simple, cost-effective tool for measuring and verifying BMI (Body Mass Index, a measure of body fat based on weight and height), this module returns results that can also be used as an indicator of subsequent disease or health conditions.

CHRONOS uses a selfie to determine BMI; algorithms are validated by direct comparison of more than a million face images that have corresponding height and weight measurements.

LIMRA 2016 Life Insurance Conference, Las Vegas

Jay was a keynote speaker at this year's conference, where he shared his industry-changing vision for the future of insurance underwriting.

AMIS 2016 Conference, Mexico City

Norvell, Janet and Jay were invited to participate in this conference, where they gave a presentation, participated on panels and led breakout sessions. They also discussed how our scientific approach to the prediction of life events is applicable to all Latin American markets.

Amrutha Sethuram, Lead Modeling & Algorithms

Describe your job in 50 words or less
As team leader for R&D at LSI, I focus on the entire life cycle of facial analytics algorithms, including research of existing techniques and validation, modeling of new algorithms, data preparation, proof-of concept design, implementation, testing and documentation.  I use image processing algorithms, pattern recognition and machine learning.
Why LSI?
I was working at the Face Aging Group with Dr. Karl Ricanek prior to joining LSI. When I was presented with this opportunity to be a part of a start-up that will revolutionize the longevity prediction and life cycle space, I could not resist! I am passionate about the work that we do at LSI and I love working with the team here, who are all motivated, smart, hard-working and fun! I’m currently working on decoupling information from the face that can derive smoking and drinking traits, occurrence of heart disease and predict the health of the individual.

What gets you out of bed in the morning?
I love the challenges that my work involves! Given the high degree of variation that can occur in facial images, including but not limited to skin tones, ethnic differences, pose variations, expression, illumination changes, occlusions; it is not a trivial task to develop algorithms that are robust to all such variations. To be involved in cutting edge research and develop techniques to derive information from the face that can be used as a health predictor is exciting!

Amazon and MasterCard introduce 'selfie security'

LSI’s Facial Analytics team has long recognized the value of using biometrics in the prediction of life events and now leads the way in developing algorithms to validate self-reported health, as well as to examine facial features for signs of exceptional longevity. This knowledge has been incorporated into our CHRONOS platform using a simple ‘selfie’. Now it seems as if other industries are finally recognizing how ‘selfies’ can be used for transactional purposes and to validate identity.

Both Amazon and MasterCard have recently announced plans to allow shoppers to use ‘selfies’ during the purchase process. Amazon customers will soon be able to pay by ‘selfie’ after verifying they are a real person by blinking or smiling. Select MasterCard holders can now ‘pay with their face’ by downloading an identity verification app. We predict that soon, the use of biometrics will become standard in online transactions, improving security, eliminating the need for verification codes and remembering passwords. In turn, that will create a whole new world of data and opportunities for industries that depend on the prediction of health and longevity.

Lapetus scientists share their vision for how the digital health revolution is set to transform and improve public health

In a forthcoming special issue of Computer to be published this coming November, LSI scientists set out a vision for how the digital health revolution is set to transform and improve public health. The rise of a multi-billion dollar tech industry involving wearable sensors that monitor internal bodily functions in real time will drive the revolution.  In their paper entitled “Designing the Future of Smart Health”, the LSI team develops and demonstrates an algorithm that transforms step counts into mortality and health risk; they propose a new crowd sourced international health survey; describe how annual physicals will be dramatically enhanced by the addition of longitudinal data from body sensors; and anticipate the rise of a "health data economy" driven by a newly developed Health Credit Score (combining physical and economic health) where “rewards” for healthy behavior will come in unexpected ways from sources never imagined before.
