The Substance Abuse Prevention Coalition of Ontario County is excited to launch our quarterly newsletter that will be published in September, December, March and June.

The Prevention Coalition is working hard to prevent Heroin and Prescription Drug Abuse in Ontario County.  Each newsletter will feature information from our various work groups along with where you can find the coalition throughout the county.

As always, we greatly appreciate your support.  If you have any questions, please feel free to contact me at petrea.rae@gmail.com.

Enjoy the beautiful fall weather,

Petrea Rae, Coalition Coordinator
The Substance Abuse Prevention Coalition of Ontario County, an initiative of the Partnership for Ontario County.

Vision:  Substance Abuse Free Ontario County

Mission: To collaboratively engage, inform and unite our communities in the reduction of substance abuse through prevention efforts

The coalition meets on the 3rd Wednesday of every month at the Wood Library.  We also  have a number of sub-committees/work groups that are meeting separate from the larger coalition meeting to work on individual strategies.

Only you can secure your medication!

The Substance Abuse Prevention Coalition of Ontario County is launching the "Monitor, Secure, Dispose" Campaign across Ontario County to help build awareness around restricting availability of medications at home.

During the Fall of 2015 and Spring of 2016, the coalition surveyed over 2,000 youth, young adults and community members about their perception of drugs and alcohol in Ontario County.  32% of youth surveyed responded that they got prescription drugs used for non-medical purposes from either their home or the home of a friend or relative.

How does this happen?

By medication being left in a location where anyone who enters your home can access it and take a few pills without you knowing.

What can you do?

The Prevention Coalition encourages everyone to take the following steps:

Monitor - count your medication regularly to ensure that none have gone missing.

Secure - lock up any medication you do not want anyone to access in either a locking drawer, locking medicine cabinet or safe.

Dispose - make sure any unwanted, unused or expired medication is disposed of properly at one of our medication drop off locations around Ontario County or at one of our mobile take back events in September or April.

For more details on where to dispose of your medications, please visit our website at http://substanceabusepreventioncoalitionofontariocounty.com.

Check out our new magnets available to remind everyone to "Monitor, Secure and Dispose" of their medication.  Let us know if you want one!
