Celebrate Juneteenth this Saturday, June 19

This Saturday, June 19, is Juneteenth, a day that commemorates the day in 1865 when Union troops arrived in Texas to free enslaved Americans. Although the Emancipation Proclamation had formally freed them almost two and a half years earlier, enforcement of the proclamation had been slow and inconsistent in Texas, the most remote of the slave states.

For communities across the United States, Juneteenth is a day to reflect on the legacy of slavery and racism in the United States, honor the Black Americans who fought and sacrificed for the rights and privileges we know today and celebrate Black culture, history and experience.

Celebrate Juneteenth this year and support a Black-Owned Business. Visit the destination map of Black-Owned Businesses that are within walking distance of Metro Bike Share stations. We are offering free 30-minute rides this weekend so that you can get to these businesses, and anywhere else you are celebrating Juneteenth, with bike share.

To redeem a free 30-minute ride this weekend, select 1-Ride Pass at any Metro Bike Share station, online, or in the app, and use the promo code 061921 at checkout. This code will be valid from Saturday, June 16, through Sunday, June 17, 2021. Rides longer than 30 minutes are just $1.75 every 30 minutes thereafter.

If you know of more Black-Owned Business that you want to share with other bike share riders, let us know, and we'll add it to the map! Please send us an e-mail at

Ride with Pride Ride Guide

We're really excited to share our latest Ride Guide for Pride Month!

The Ride with Pride Guide will guide you through the historical LGBTQ+ neighborhoods of Silver Lake and Los Feliz past landmarks and sites of LGBTQ+ resistance, resilience, and community-building.
The Ride with Pride Guide takes you by historic and significant sites of LGBTQ+ resistance, resilience and community-building.
This four-mile loop in Central LA begins and ends at Vermont / Sunset Metro Bike Share station. Below are some of the places you will visit on this ride:
  • Out of the Closet Thrift Store: The store directly funds AIDS Healthcare Foundation's HIV/AIDS programs and their new housing services, as well as on-site pharmacies and free HIV testing.
  • Prospect Studios: In 1967, the first edition of the Advocate, a prominent local LGBTQ+ magazine, was published in the basement of ABC Television Studios West, now Prospect Studios.
  • Manzanita Community Garden and Rainbow Steps: This is an urban community garden, complete with rainbow steps leading up to Sunset Blvd. 27% of LGBT adults reported experiencing food insecurity in the year prior. Community gardens pave the way for sustainable communities.
  • The Black Cat: After a raid on the restaurant in 1967, the Black Cat was the site of one of the first civil demonstrations against police brutality and entrapment of LGBTQ+ people. This happened two years before the Stonewall Uprising on the East Coast.
  • Vista Theater: The Vista has a long history of being an LGBTQ+ community space, including hosting the first Outfest Film Festivals in L.A. from 1982 – 1985.
