Representative Thierry Takes the Lead on Women’s Health:  Files Additional Legislation to Mandate Postpartum Depression Screenings for New Mothers

HB 2303 will guarantee maternal postpartum depression screenings within the first year after childbirth, covered under Medicaid and child health plan programs.

Austin, Texas:   As part of her comprehensive women’s health bill package and in addition to HB 2403 (Maternal Mortality Study), Representative Shawn Thierry (D-Houston) has filed legislation to help identify mothers who may be suffering from postpartum depression.  Under HB 2303, a postpartum depression screening for the mother will be covered under the child’s existing healthcare plan and will be performed during the “well-child visit” that occurs before the first birthday.

"After reviewing the report from the Maternal Mortality and Morbidity Task Force, it was apparent that postpartum depression may be a contributing factor to the rise in maternal illnesses and deaths in Texas.  If our healthcare professionals are given the ability to detect and treat the symptoms of postpartum depression early on, we will lower costs of future medical expenses, and diminish the risks of pregnancy related illness and deaths,” said Rep. Thierry.
