Report: Pan Pacific Masters Games ‘Wetas Being Masterful’ - By Keith Chidzey

Last weekend, took a little drive in the countryside from Sydney to Brisvegas for the Pan Pacific Masters Games. This turned out to be the launching and racing baptism for my new toy ‘Curglaff’.

After an 18 year absence from dinghy racing, anticipation was high – and didn’t the Goldy turn on a great event! Warm sunny weather – tick; friendly locals – tick; well-organized regatta – tick; sedate breezes (for the first time was good) – tick; good size fleet to learn off – not so tick (I was only interstate or international + not many locals); a huge fun time … most important – big tick.

For me, the chief aim was to have an intensive weekend of sailing to start to get used to a different boat and get my learning curve kick-started in a big way. Aim achieved is a really nice way!

The Racing

Day 1: 2 races; 5-15 knots SE with a tricky chop resultant from an adverse tidal run. Courses were a bit limited by the MANY sandbanks, which resulted in a priority being placed on boat speed and clear air from the start. Andres quickly showed he was the boat to beat with speed to burn, resulting in 2 bullets. Some very fun kite rides were had!

Day 2: 4 races; 3 – 10 knots SE. This was a tough day for me making some rookie errors, plus size does matter for a lardo like me in this stuff resulting in me watching everyone’s sterns disappear in the distance more than once. Andres nailed all 4 races with Don showing remarkable speed.

Day 3: 1 race; WIND! Finally! Up to 15 knots Se with flat water ... yeehaa! Some great blasts under sunny skies. Doesn’t get much better. I wanted more!

Bling was handed out to all and sundry for the various age divisions, with Andre easily overall first on yardstick, Don and I sharing second, Bill taking honourable mention – and hardly a cat to be seen up the list!

This regatta could be a great showpiece for Wetas, as many locals were impressed. 2020 it is back on – let’s put on a show next time with lots of boats!

SQ Jumping the tracks

The built in luff curve of the new SQ sail and the new easy-adjustable batten tensioners, means there's more stress on foot of the sail at the luff and as a result the bolt rope can jump out of the mast track above the track feeder.

To avoid this, you need to tension the tack strap around the mast to take the strain off the bolt rope.

Australia Weta Sailor Profile

We'd love to know who you are and how you got into Weta sailing. So send us a description and a selfie photo with your Weta including your most enjoyable sail to date. If you can't manage a written story, just use your camera on the phone to record your segment and email it to ausweta@gmail.com (Dropbox, Google Drive or Flickr available for large files). Raw footage is fine - we can edit for your approval.

Optimum Time's Jumbo Timer just got better

The display is huge - 38mm in diameter. This makes the watch much easier to read and there is an option for massive digits (23mm high!) in the final 59 seconds of the countdown so no problems reading the time in the hectic final minute before the start. The sailing countdown can be programmed in 1, 3, or 5 minute increments, and then set to repeat or count up.  $152 at Binks Marine

Knot of the month

A new easy to tie stopper knot that won't slip when made with Dyneema. Animated instructions here

Chipping away

It's easy to chip the trailing edge of your foils. Previously you had to make your own reinforcement to strengthen the repair, Plastic Padding glassfibre filler comes reinforced with glass filaments. For smaller chips, I recommend epoxy filler such as Norfil

Waterproof Telltales

If you're fed up with the wool telltales sticking to the sail every time they get wet, try replacing them with the Rooster Sailing Teflon-Coated Telltales . And if you have trouble seeing them through the new grey mylar sails, try putting them either side of the clear window. They will soon be available from Rooster Australia for $10.
