Report: Humbybong Yacht Club 2018 Winter Bash

3 Weta’s turned up to compete.
We had 3 races on Saturday, back to back competition in Division 2, consisting of 3 Weta’s, a mixture of Hobie 16, Mosquito, Nacra 4.5 & 4.3 & Arrow Cats.
The Weta’s performed very well with 5-10 knots of wind, seems to be a sweet spot in their performance.
The Marathon Race on Sunday was about 15km long. Peter using his new SQ sail, won the start with a port start. Glenn started at the starboard end which placed him 200 metres behind. Peter led for the first 2 turning marks, then sailing on a ¾ broad reach across the other side of the bay & back with only 3-5 knots of wind. Glenn finally caught and passed Peter, but Glenn missed going through the gate and had to turn around and undo what he had done. Peter was in front again by about 100 metres. Heading to the finish line, Glenn slowly caught up to Peter. The Finish was a dead heat (both finishing at the same time).
Justin Ansell, a newcomer to the Weta Class, sailing 177 sailed well on Saturday but retired on Sunday. Having only sailed by himself at Humpybong Yacht Club, Justin gained a few valuable tips from Peter & Glenn on how to get his boat sailing faster. Hopefully Justin will make the trip to Lake Cootharaba on August 25th & 26th so he can gain some more experience sailing this great class.
Results: Division 2 -  1st Glenn Foley (Weta Trimaran), 2nd Peter Hackett (Weta Trimaran), 3rd Luke Oakden (Nacra 4.5 Super Sloop) Full results  More photos here.

Anchored - Traditional Sailboat Sound Generator

Avast ye land lubbers and listen to the sounds of the old ship as she plies the world's oceans.
Customise the sound mix to make it balmy to help you sleep or stormy to wake you up.

Tip: Rocket Science

The SQ 9.3 sail comes with a "Rocket" and key to tension the top batten. The rocket slips loosely over the end of the batten and then the webbing loops at either side of the batten pocket fit over the fins. The batten and rocket will stay in position when under tension, but it's hard to roll the sail with the batten in place. So if you remove it, consider either taping the rocket to the end of the batten or drill a small hole in one of the fins and tie the rocket to the batten loops. Tie the key to the mast strap. If do you loose it, Weta have replacements available.

Sail Exchange - Sell your old sails
With the new sailing season starting, you may be thinking of replacing your old worn Gaastra sails for some flatter bi-radial cut North Sails or the new SQ mainsail to take you to the front of the fleet, but wondered what to do with the old sails. Sail Exchange sell used sails and boat parts for both Yachts and Dinghies - more information here.

Australian Weta Class Association Report

President's Report
Hamish is still recuperating from his hip replacement but is processing the acquisition of trophies for state titles. He's also written to Yachting Victoria to ask them to change the default yardstick to a non-foam core boat with the pin-head sail rather than the foam core with the SQ sail as at present.
