Edmonton Election Update: Sept. 13, 2017

By Mack Male

Welcome to our sixth roundup of election-related news and links. We'll be publishing this kind of collection regularly right through to Election Day, which is Oct. 16, 2017. We hope you find it useful, and welcome any feedback or tips you might have.

Nomination Day is Monday

Monday, Sept. 18, is Nomination Day! All candidates running for mayor, city councillor, or school board trustee must submit their registration paperwork that day between 9 a.m. and noon. Here are the nomination papers and instructions that candidates will need, and here is the process and protocols that must be followed.

Here's what else you need to know about Nomination Day:

  • Normally candidates are not allowed to campaign in City Hall, but Nomination Day is the exception. Candidates can wear, carry, and share campaign items, and they can take campaign photographs inside City Hall.
  • Each candidate must pay a nomination deposit — $500 for mayor, $100 for councillor, and $100 for school board trustee.
  • If candidates change their minds, they have until noon on Sept. 19 to withdraw their nomination.
  • Nomination deposits will be returned to candidates within two weeks of Election Day if they win, withdraw their nomination, or receive "at least half the number of votes as the candidate elected" in their race.

Edmonton Elections has committed to posting the full candidate list online by 4 p.m. on Monday.
