Edmonton Election Update: July 13, 2017

By Mack Male

Today we're excited to launch our brand new Edmonton Election Update. This collection of municipal election-related news and links will be published regularly right through to Election Day, which is Oct. 16, 2017. I did a similar series of posts on my blog during the 2013 municipal election. We hope you find it useful, and welcome any feedback you might have.

Iveson remains uncontested

Mayor Don Iveson filed his notice of intent to run for a second term last November and officially launched his campaign in May. Early polls had him cruising to a second term even as the rest of his council colleagues fared a bit worse. With just 96 days to go until Election Day, both CBC and Global are reporting that the mayor faces no prominent challengers for his job.

The mayor said his team is "preparing for anything" but assuming no credible competitors step forward will focus his campaign around a vision for the city. "Edmonton is on the verge of something extraordinary and I’m inspired by the opportunity to make change ours," Mayor Iveson wrote in his campaign announcement.

Ward 5 heats up

With Coun. Michael Oshry choosing not to seek re-election in Ward 5, we have an open race on our hands and it is already starting to get interesting. There are six candidates who have announced their intentions to run in the ward, five of whom are women (just 13 women ran for council in 2013). Nafisa BowenSarah HamiltonMiranda JimmyDawn Newton, and Svetlana Pavlenko have all launched their websites and have been actively campaigning in recent weeks. Alex McFarlane hasn't launched his website yet but has been posting his platform on Facebook.
