2017 International Year of Sustainable Tourism for Development, among European engagements and local practices

The United Nations 70th General Assembly has designated 2017 as the International Year of Sustainable Tourism for Development. The objective of the Year is to raise public, political and corporate awareness on the important contribution that sustainable tourism can make to global economic and social development while mobilizing all stakeholders to work together in making tourism a catalyst for positive change.

To mark that Day, AGE co-organized a joint event at the European Parliament.

European Accessibility Act: where do we stand?

End 2015 the European Commission proposed a Directive to improve the functioning of the internal market for accessible products and services by removing barriers created by divergent legislation. This will facilitate the work of companies while bringing benefits for older people and people with disabilities in the European Union.

Joining forces for accessible payment terminals

In the framework of the European Accessibiliy Act, proposed by the European Commission end 2015 and now discussed by the European Parliament and the Council of the EU, AGE has joined the “Pay-Able” platform which seeks to make barrier free access to payment terminals for everyone in Europe.

Be aware of your rights as passengers!

In order to raise awareness of passengers on their rights when they experience delays, cancellations, damaged luggage or have special mobility needs, the European Commission is providing new material in different format and languages.

AGE Platform Europe has accepted to become a Campaign's Active Supporter to further promote the rights to which older passengers are entitled to.

SEED sets up first Silver Economy Awards

AGE Platform Europe, together with other EU stakeholders, is setting up the first Silver Economy Awards, powered by the EU-funded SEED project. AGE sends joint letter to Members of the European Parliament on EU Accessibility Act

AGE has decided to join forces with ANEC and the European Disability Forum by sending a letter to all Members of the European Parliament. This letter highlights several key elements of an ongoing EP draft report which threatens to lead to an unambitious position of the European Parliament on the Accesibility Act proposed by the European Commission.

European Pillar of Social Rights: going forward together?

On 23 January 2017 the European Commission organised a conference on the European Pillar of Social Rights which gathered European institutions and agencies, EU Member States, social partners and civil society. AGE Platform Europe took part the event to highlight the social situation of older people in Europe and voice their concerns and expectations.

ATDAL+40 calls for supporting 50-year Marcelli’s march and petition against unemployment

AGE Italian member organisation ATDAL over 40 is supporting the action of Graziano Marcelli, a 50-year-old unemployed Italian citizen, who will start a long march across Italy on 22 January. His objective is to shed light on the very difficult situation faced by thousands of jobless seniors in Italy and collect signatures for a petition to be handed over to the Italian President, Sergio Mattarella.

Violence in care: an issue that needs prevention and oversight

In January the German press featured an article on violence against older people in two residential care homes. While residential care homes can have many advantages that older people might cherish, they can also foster a climate of conflict between carers and residents. The article stirs a debate on violence in care homes, and should be read without overlooking another challenge: maltreatment and abuse of older people living at home.

More support for non-formal adult education, asks the European Parliament

The European Parliament has adopted a resolution in its February Plenary on the Erasmus+ programme for education and training. The resolution highlights the importance of non-formal adult education and learning for integrating adults in the labour market and to promote their social inclusion. The Parliament calls for increasing the significance and visibility of non-formal education in Erasmus+ and the development of adult learning institutions.

Interventions for improving independence and mental wellbeing of older people

A research team from the Personal Social Services Research Unit (PSSRU) at the London School of Economics and Political Science (LSE) in collaboration with the Finnish National Institute for Health and Welfare (THL) led work on evidence reviews focusing on interventions for improving the independence and wellbeing of older people. The findings were aimed at informing the development of a guideline on independence and wellbeing in older people residing in the community and at risk of decline

Together against Parkinson's: call for ambassadors!

The i-PROGNOSIS project aims at developing a mobile application to support early diagnosis of Parkinson’s disease and to improve the quality of life of diagnosed patients. As the second year of the project starts, we are recruiting ambassadors for the promotion of the mobile application that will permit to gather anonymised data relating to early PD symptoms.

European Parliament asks the EU to work internationally for the rights of older people

The European Parliament adopted two resolutions in December 2016 calling the European Union and its member states to strengthen their international commitment on the human rights of older people. One resolution calls to take part in the United Nations Open-Ended Working Group on Ageing in order to protect the rights of older people. Another invites member states to engage themselves in the Madrid International Action Plan on Ageing (MIPAA), which is under review in 2017.

Bras Dessus Bras Dessous promotes solidarity among neighbours and older persons' social inclusion

'Bras Dessus Bras Dessous' is a network of citizens based on solidarity, currently in pilot phase in Forest (Brussels, Belgium). It aims at connecting isolated or vulnerable older persons with neighbours willing to dedicate some time and attention to them on a one-off or regular basis.
