This month's top tips
The Comma Sense guide to email etiquette
  1. Time is precious - make use of the subject line to grab your reader's attention. Then get to the point quickly.
  2. Be professional - your email is a reflection of your business. If you want to LOL, send a text message.
  3. Never write in capitals, or you'll become known as 'the shouty one'.
  4. Avoid sending large attachments that clog up inboxes. Zip or compress large files as a courtesy to others.
  5. Always proof your email before you press Send. Above all, did you spell the recipient's name and company name correctly?
  6. If it's an emotionally charged message or you're not sure about the content, you may be best sitting on it for an hour, or even overnight, and returning to it in the morning with a fresh outlook.
