Dear Reader,
Welcome to the fourth and last newsletter of this year. A lot has happened in the past few months! In this newsletter, we will tell you about our students in Uganda, the land which New Hope bought and where the first crops are being grown, the new Talking Hands website, the crafts sales, the follow-up meeting of the Change the Game Academy, and Talking Hands' networking activities.
Talking Hands wishes you happy holidays and best wishes for 2022!

The pupils

Schools in Uganda are still not open. The government has promised that from the beginning of next year, with or without sufficiently vaccinated teachers, education will resume. In order to see how the pupils and families at home are doing, our partner organization New Hope for the Deaf has visited the pupils we support at home again. During the visits, the general well-being of the pupils was checked, and the children themselves were able to tell, in sign language, how they are doing. In addition, extra teaching material was distributed. It is very important that the pupils continue to learn and we are hopeful that they will be able to go back to school in the beginning of 2022.

Christmas Markets

Every year Talking Hands participates with a stall in the Christmas market in Singen (Germany). Last year the Christmas market was cancelled due to covid-19. This year the Christmas market was supposed to take place, but after many preparations, searching and informing volunteers and a day of setting up and decorating the stall, the Christmas market was cancelled again. Also two Christmas markets in Renkum and Wolfheze in which Talking Hands was to participate were cancelled shortly beforehand. The financial situation of Talking Hands is difficult since normally half of our income comes from selling crafts or markets. Therefore, additional donations would be very welcome.

Change the Game Academy follow up meeting

The directors of New Hope for the Deaf hosted a team from the Change the Game Academy for a coaching visit. Babra and Sabrina, two directors of New Hope participated in the Local Fundraising training offered by the Change the Game Academy a few months ago. During the follow-up visit, a wide range of topics were discussed, including finding a market for the harvest, partnerships with various organizations and the local government, ideas related to local fundraising events and involving former students in the crafts department. New Hope and Talking Hands are grateful for the support and collaboration with the Change the Game Academy!

End of the year 2021

Once again, due to the covid-19 pandemic, 2021 looked different than hoped for. Schools in Uganda remained largely closed. Fortunately, the final exams of the last class of primary school (P7) went ahead and the 6 students who Talking Hands and New Hope suppprt graduated! Other students could not attend school for almost the whole year, but New Hope visited the students regularly and handed out learning materials. Most markets were canceled, making it very difficult for us to sell crafts, which normally provides us with most of our income. We did manage to buy land in Uganda in 2021 to build the future school on and have also started farming activities on this land! Despite some setbacks, we can look back with satisfaction on a successful year. We hope that in 2022 the pupils will be able to go back to school and continue their education. In addition, we will continue to draw up plans and designs for building a school.

2021 is almost over; we hope to see you again in 2022!

The work we do in Uganda is very important! We would therefore like to ask you kindly to support us. To help us secure the future of our projects, we are especially happy with a monthly donation, but of course all contributions are very welcome! You can donate to Talking Hands Foundation, IBAN: NL74 RABO 0301 2992 50

The land

The directors of New Hope visited the land on which the new school will be built. Many activities are already underway, including the school garden. Maize and beans are among the crops currently being grown on the land. The crops are growing well, and the beans have already been harvested! The harvested crops will be sold, and contribute to an independent income for New Hope. A hedge is also growing around the land, so that an expensive and ugly fence will not be needed when the school is built.

New website

Talking Hands' new website is online! The website has a new layout and all information is now up to date again. We are very grateful for the work of Your Future Academy, as they have designed and created this website for us. Currently the website is only available in Dutch, but soon the website will also be available in English and German. Are you also curious how the new Talking Hands website looks like? Take a look!

We are curious what you think of the new website!

Another crafts workshop took place in Uganda with the two deaf women who make crafts for Talking Hands. During this workshop they have been working on improving the designs and developing new designs such as tobacco pouches, fanny packs, gift bags, chalk bags and oven gloves which will be available from next year onwards! You could support us by organizing the sale of crafts on behalf of Talking Hands in your personal circle, at a market, or by making an enquiry at a shop in your neighborhood. We will then send you a package with a selection of crafts. One example is the Novemberleuchtenmarkt in Dörenthe (Germany), where Rita ran a stall for Talking Hands with the energetic support of several women. Another example is the stall of Talking Hands crafts at a farmer's place in Ibbenbüren (Germany), where customers can buy crafts alongside their vegetables.

Do you want to help Talking Hands sell crafts?

In recent months, our board has done a lot of networking. As of this year, Talking Hands is one of the 400 members of Partin, a Dutch social organization which represents the interests of private initiatives working in development cooperation. Two board members of Talking Hands attended the Wilde Ganzen - Partin day. It was an inspiring day full of lectures, workshops on local fundraising, communication and social media, and networking. Within Partin there is also the Uganda Platform. The member organizations of this platform meet twice a year to discuss the work of their organizations. Talking Hands attended a meeting last month where, among others, the impact of the covid-19 pandemic on the work of the various organizations was discussed. It was great to exchange experiences and ideas and to learn from each other!

Networking and learning from each other is very important!

What you can do

Inspired? Would you also like to contribute to Talking Hands and do you have some time to spare? We are always looking for extra help! For example, you can organize fundraising activities, like sales of second hand articles or Ugandan crafts in your neighborhood. Or you could ask for a donation to Talking Hands as a birthday or anniversary present!
